Purple Rain

I've been watching too much politics on TV lately and its causing me severe anxiety/anger/acid indigestion. I had to turn it off tonight so I flipped around a bit and landed on the movie "Purple Rain". Prince is one of a kind, he can dance, sing, act, play numerous instruments and change his name - all with a certain flair of arrogance and class. I like him.

Back in 2005 I wrote about my experience of watching Prince being "booed" off stage at a concert in the 80's. He's come a long way since then. Like him or not, he's got talent. A guy I dated recently had the opportunity to be his bodyguard for a weekend and told me all about him. They did't talk much but he got to watch him rehearsing (not sure for what) and said he was in awe watching Prince go from one insturment to the next, playing each one with excellence.

Do you like Prince?

I like Prince. But from what I hear he's kinda wacky. I was watching "An Evening with Kevin Smith." Which is basically the director Kevin Smith answering questions of fans.
Anyway, he apparently was asked to do some work for Prince, and he retold the whole experience... pretty funny.
Something about Prince asking for a camel in the middle of the night and not understanding why it just wasn't possible.
Also one of his managers told Kevin that Prince has about 50 fully done highly produced music videos in a vault that he won't let anyone see. Kinda Strange. :)

I have been known to like some of his music (mostly older stuff), but as a person he just seems eclectic to the point of total weirdness. Purple Rain is a good movie, though and I do know he's talented.

I like Prince, I think he is a great musician, strange maybe, but his songs are hard to forget,

Jess, interesting!!! Yep, can't deny that he's a bit different but those ultra talented genius types usually are :) A camel??? LOL

Erin, I like a lot of his music but have to be in the right mood for it.

RAHM, hey! Very hard to forget.

In one interview tonight they compared him to Michael Jackson and Springsteen in relation to his passion - that made me smile.

Prince is one of the most important artists of the 80s. Few artists have had a string of truly great albums like he did from 1999 through Sign O the Times and the latter album is one of the all-time great double albums (up there with the White Album and London Calling). He's been erratic in later years with some decent albums and some real stinkers, but I don't think he's done anything to diminish his unique ability to marry funk and rock in a way that hadn't been touched since probably Sly & the Family Stone.

Prince is easily on my short list of rock's best guitarists and perhaps at the top of the most underrated guitarists list. That anonymous Satriani fan can put that in his pipe and smoke it!

Bob, excellent description of Prince. I wish I could write like you. I'm glad you saw the comment from Anon and were able to respond to it.

Prince is a stunning talent. His personal life means nothing to me, but he is an amazing musician.

The thing I like about Prince's music is that it will always be on the edge. Even though he's gotten mainstream success, he has always been authentic. So it seems like all of his music, no matter when he made it, has a raw quality that keeps it fresh.

Did that make sense?

David - i like that "stunning talent"

Daniel, makes TOTAL sense to me!

I agree with Bob Vinyl's assessment that Prince is one of rock's most underrated guitarists. My only guess as to why some people slight him is because of his androgynous image. If those naysayers were to listen to the blistering solo at the end of "Let's Go Crazy" or hear Prince jam on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison at the 2004 RRHOF induction ceremony during the George Harrison tribute, they might rethink things. Maybe.
