Super Group - Traveling Wilburys

I can't think of a more "super" super group than The Traveling Wilburys.  I love the story of how they got together and how they made up their fictional names pretending to be half brothers all with the same father.  Sounds like they had a lot of fun with it:

"Starting at a meal among Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne, the group came together at Bob Dylan's home studio inMalibu, California, to record an additional track as a B-side for the single release of Harrison's "This Is Love". Tom Petty's involvement came by chance as Harrison had left his guitar at Petty's house.[3] The record label, however, decided that the song that resulted, "Handle with Care", was too good to be released as a "single filler".
The members enjoyed working together so much that they decided to create a full album together. Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, written by all the members, was recorded over a ten-day period in May 1988, and released on October 18. The "Wilburys" joke was extended further, with the band members credited under various pseudonyms, all sons of a fictional Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. and half brothers. The album was a critical and commercial success, spawning several successful singles and eventually reaching triple-platinum sales status in the US. The album was nominated for several awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989.
Roy Orbison's death on December 6, 1988, brought the end of the original lineup. In tribute to Orbison, during the music video for "End of the Line", when Orbison sings, his photo is shown followed by a shot of his guitar in a rocking chair."

The Traveling Wilburys of Volume 1 were:
  • Nelson Wilbury - George Harrison
  • Otis Wilbury - Jeff Lynne
  • Lefty Wilbury - Roy Orbison
  • Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. - Tom Petty
  • Lucky Wilbury - Bob Dylan
The Traveling Wilburys of Volume 3 were:
  • Spike Wilbury - George Harrison
  • Clayton Wilbury - Jeff Lynne
  • Muddy Wilbury - Tom Petty
  • Boo Wilbury - Bob Dylan

Pearl Jam - Review

I've realized something in recent months - I am not very good at reviewing music. Sure, I can give you my opinion on what I like, but when asked to review something that is not something I would typically listen to, I am at a loss for words.

Writing this blog has allowed me the privilege of receiving CDs and DVDs on a weekly basis to review. I turn down most offers but curiosity gets the best of me and I agree to review about half of them.

Right now, I have fallen way behind. Sitting here on my desk is:

The Traveling Wilbury's Collection (CD)
Richard Thompson "Sweet Warrior" (CD)
Bryan Ferry "Dylanesque" (CD)
Pearl Jam "Live at the Gorge" (CD) (Becky - want it?)
and
Sammy and the Wabos "Livin it up in St. Louis" (DVD)

I don't want to shirk my duties as a reviewer....but I sure could use some help. If any of you would like one of these items to review on your blog please email me with your address and I will mail it to you!

For now, I will put in Pearl Jam. AND I won't accept any more offers to review music until I am caught up!

UPDATE!

Ok, I could NOT handle Pearl Jam but I am finding Bryan Ferry's covers on Bob Dylan very interesting. If you like him and like Dylan - you will like this CD! Its so different hearing the lyrics in such a smooth, slow voice. "Along the Watchtower" was very especially intriguing.

Ann Wilson - Solo Debut

YES! Those of you who read here know I love Ann Wilson, her voice, her presence on stage and her confidence, style and class. She just rocks. So I was pleased to find this tidbit of info over at "Classic Rock"

Heart singer Ann Wilson issues her solo debut, Hope And Glory, via Rounder Records on September 11. It features guest appearances from Elton John, KD Lang, Alison Krauss, Shawn Colvin, Rufus Wainwright and her sister Nancy Wilson.

Don't get me started on all the reasons I admire Ann....I think I've covered it on this blog in a prior post. The bottom line is she's a role model for women over 40 and for those who may not be quite as slender as society would consider "attractive". She went through some hellish years because she didn't fit the mold of the slender rock chick, but now she exudes confidence and her voice is stronger than ever. She's 57 years old and is coming out with a solo album with that sexy photo on the cover - that in itself makes a statement that some women just keep getting better with age! :)

Can't wait to get my copy to review (assuming I receive one)! Hope it shows up soon.

That reminds me....The Traveling Wilburys have a CD coming out that I will be reviewing soon, it's called
"The Traveling Wilburys Collection"
