Great Guitar Solos

One of my all time favorite's is Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption".
Quote about this solo from Rolling Stone magazine:

Eddie Van Halen's 102-second mission statement was a piece he invented onstage: a solo showcase for his mastery of tone and technique, notably the rush of notes he produced with his fretboard tapping. An army of teens would try to duplicate it, emerging years later in every metal band of the Eighties.

This video is ten minutes long...but worth it.  Damn, I'm surprised his guitar didn't catch on fire.  And I have to say - one of the things that sets Eddie apart to me is his smile.  Not many guitarists appear to be having as much fun as Eddie when he's in front of an audience.

What are some of your faves?

3 Generations of Guitar Virtuosos?

Mad Hatter made a comment on the recent post about the new rock doc called "It Might Get Loud".

He suggested that perhaps Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White were not necessarily the best three choices to represent "three generations of electric guitar virtuosos".

So my question for you is: Which three would you choose for this film?

BTW, if you haven't checked out Hatter's blog you should. He reviews a lot of interesting music, some popular some obscure. I love his grading scale:
Key To Music Grades
A - You will never be whole without it
B - Highly recommended
C - Flawed, but still pretty good
D - It's your money, not mine
F - Why couldn't this have been burned in Fahrenheit 451?

Happy Birthday to Eddie Van Halen!

and to Jon Van B.

Guitar of Eddie Van HalenImage via Wikipedia1/26/55 is Ed's birthday!

Eddie Van Halen is one of my favorite guitarist of all time. I can't help but smile and feel good when I hear his distinctive sound. How do you describe his style? I am not good at describing it but I'd recognize it anywhere and am in awe of not only his talent but the joy he displays on stage when playing. How many lead guitarists SMILE throughout a show? Not many that I can think of. They are too busy looking cool :)

I wish Eddie a very happy 54th birthday.

ALSO....

I'd like to wish a happy birthday to my high school sweetheart who shares not only a birthday with Eddie, but also hails from The Netherlands.

Gelukkige Verjaardag, Jon, Ik houd van u nog!
