$30.00 to Park at Springsteen
Oh yeah, while still on the subject of the concert last night, I have a question for you:
What do you typically pay for parking at a concert in your area?
Up in Los Angeles there are a few big venues:
Staples Center
LA Collesium
LA Sports Arena
The Forum (now owned by a church)
There's not a heck of a lot of parking space for any of these spots so what happens is you have to use private park lots - and guess what? they jack up the prices on nights of big events. We passed by a $40 parking and got a closer one for $30. Still, $30 to park the car! Its maddening.
I made up for the cost of parking by spending $10 on a really cool t-shirt that I bought off a very nice young man that was hiding them under his jacket rather than paying full price ($40) inside the venue. (oh, and Pedro, the dude I bought the shirt from, did not steal his merchandise, this is common practice, to have a ton of shirts made up for the tour and sell them cheap. The only illegal part of it is that he did not have a license to sell retail. But hey, no one's perfect and plus, my shirt is UNIQUE).

I send a bunch of video posts but they did not turn out. I'll have to write more later....very tired.
The show was great, of course. He pulled out a few suprise songs. The man has more passion and energy than you can believe unless you experience it.
Music critics can criticize all they want, they look for things to pick apart. There was nothing negative to say about this show. It was not his standard 3 hours, he didn't talk to the crowd as much as he has on some occasions, the band intro was not as dramatic as usual....but the music, the songs, the powerful force of pure rock and roll permeated the night and drenched us with unadulterated get down rockin. It was a blast.
Going to bed now....Radio Nowhere blaring in my ears....I miss Bruce already, hope he can pull a few more outstanding recordings out himself, I'd hate to say goodbye to nights like tonight!
OH, He pulled out some of his old bluesy songs last night too. They ripped on this song:

California On Fire
Nothing much to post in these last few days. As you may have heard, Southern California is pretty much on fire. Its been hard to think about much else. But, speaking of FIRE, help me compile a list of songs with the word "fire" in the title. I'll name a few obvious ones off the top of my head, I know you all will think of lots more!
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
I'm On Fire - Bruce
Light My Fire - The Doors
The Fire Down Below - Bob Seeger
Fire and Rain - James Taylor

The Song Remains the Same
I was reading about the re-issue of this CLASSIC movie - really it was the next best thing to seeing Zeppelin live. There was a theater in Newport Beach that played movies at midnight every Saturday night (Friday night at that same theater was "Rocky Horror Picture Show nite for years!). It was one of those hole in the wall old time theaters, wish I knew if it was still there. I remember the first time I went to see it - my boyfriend and I sat the balcony with our feet up smoking joints and rocking out. Ahhh, the 70's....things were a lot different back then!
See Hans' blog, Here Comes the Flood for details. And yes, I will be buying this or asking for it for Christmas :)

Attention Tom Petty Fans:
I suppose if you really are a TP fan, you would already know about this, but if not, there is a one night only screening of the documentary about Tom and the HB's. It's going to be one night only, Monday the 15th, at theaters across the nation. Apparently its pretty great, took two years to film and contains rare footage.
Question: What is your favorite Tom Petty song?
This is a hard one for me but I will have to go with "The Wild One Forever" off the very first album. The band I was in covered that song back in the 80's and it brings back good memories :)
American Music Awards - Questions for You
AMA made their nominee annoucnement today. I say: big whoop. The music that I have always loved is rarely featured on any awards show. So here's a question for you:'
Imagine one of your favorite Classic Rock bands...if you were in that band, which music award (Grammy, AMA, Oscar for best Song, Etc.) would you feel honored in receiving?
Do you think there should be an award given for rock music? If so, who would you want to be the judges:
a) Other musicians
b) The fans
c) An appointed jury with various types of "experts" on music
d) other (your idea)

HA! Strange email to send to an anit-ticket scalper
Just got this note in my email (name of company deleted). I am going to respond telling them that I am against online ticket scalpers that call themselves brokers....Yeah as in "we'll break your bank account just so you can see your favorite band"
Hello,
I was hoping to get some more information regarding
a possible sponsorship/partnership with your site, Layla's Classic Rock
Faves.
We are one of the
Nation’s largest online ticket brokers, and would like to know if you would be
interested in earning money in exchange for placing a small John Fogerty premium
tickets ad on your site?
Thank you for your time.

Our Mates Down Under
(this post title has the potential for being misinterpreted...so please read on)
HT to Bob Vinyl for pointing out this excellent article out of the Sydney Morning Herald. If I , a bit more energy and a lot more time I could easily see myself starting some kind of similar protest against TICKET SCALPERS. I ranted on my other blog about it. Apparently its an international problem but some Aussies are taking a stand and I applaud them. Hopefully it will be successful and we can do the same thing here.
This is so similar to what happens to me every time I want to see one of my favorite bands:

Melbourne university student Carl Hirst is one of many who has been
rallying eBay users to fight back against scalpers since tickets to the Sydney
and Melbourne concerts of Rage Against The Machine sold out within seconds after
going on sale at 9am last Thursday.
Within an hour, general admission floor
tickets, which had a face value of $111.70, were selling on eBay for over five
times that amount. So, to Carl and the others I say "Good on you, mate! Don't give up!"

The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack
I think I mentioned recently that I read Nikki Sixx's book, The Heroin Diaries. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to stare into ugly face of addiction. It's not for the easily offended.
I admire Nikki for coming back from "death" and making his life something meaningful. The soundtrack to this book is interesting. I haven't listened to it all yet, but there's some intensely emotional lyrics. As someone who's familiar with addiction, traumatic childhood issues and serious depression - I can appreciate it very much. These songs are like a purging of his emotions, very raw, compelling. I can't stop listening to it, even though its disturbing...He reads portions of the book.
Note to fathers: You matter so much to your kids, don't ever underestimate how important it is for you to be involved in your kids lives.
The proceeds to this CD and his book go to Covenant House - an org. that helps street kids.

Quick review on Bruce's new cd:
i love it!
I promise after this post I will not write about Bruce again until 10/20/07. Its become apparent to me in reading my own blog that I am a huge fan and I am even getting sick of listening to myself go on about him, so you must be too. BUT....
With that said, I would like to point you to one of my favorite music reviewer's post on the new CD. Bob and I don't always see eye to eye but I like his critical ear and no hold's bar approach to revewing music or sharing his opionion on any subject.
In looking back over 20 years of Springsteen concerts, the best ones for me personally were:
Darkness on the Edge of Town
The River
Human Touch/Lucky Town
The Rising

Quote from Bob:I agree with this except for the word FINALLY. The Rising was a great arena album, being in the audience of that show was electrifying at moments...solemn, important. It wasn't just about the music, it was about the feeling in the air that was lingering from 9/11. Unity. Plus, no matter WHAT Bruce always kicks ass for at least three hours. Even non-Bruce fans will admit that his shows are OUTSTANDING!
Springsteen has finally released a new album that shows he can write arena-sized songs that appeal to listeners on a personal level, something he hasn't done in almost 25 years.

I wonder where Bruce Springsteen stands on political issues...
NOT! Everyone KNOWS where he stands because he is very vocal about it and many of his song promote his ideals. Mike Althouse has a really good post on Bruce right here. He also put this video on his site from today's Today show. I have mixed feelings about Bruce and politics. I don't necessarily disagree with him, but there have been a few incidents that have caused me concern. Luckily this is not a political blog, cause I am NOT going there.
As I said in a comment to Mike on his blog, the reason I started listening to Bruce back in the mid-70's was because he spoke to the lonely, passionate girl inside me that longed to run away from the mundane mediocrity of middle-class suburbia. His songs were all about that. As I grew and matured so did his music.
Our lives parallel in many areas, we share the same birthday separated by ten years and two days, we both had our first child within a few months of each other. When he wrote "Pony Boy" for his son, Evan, I was signing it to my son, Keven. I know it sounds weird, but after seeing him in concert 16 times, reading literally hundreds or articles and dozens of books about him, listening to countless interviews, watching hours and hours of video....I kinda feel like I know him pretty damn well. And I don't like him for who he is, I like him because of who he is and because he kicks ass like no other in concert.
