Did you know that they recorded this is under 4 weeks AND that they were not very happy with most of it.
Bob Lefsetz has a great article on the release of this album and why, even though it seemed so "mainstream" (which got The Police a whole new audience and shot them into fame), even the hardcore fans HAD to love these songs! Check it out:

If "Zenyatta Mondatta" had been the debut, the Police would have had no credibility. They would have had a hard time selling out stadiums. For "Zenyatta Mondatta" was a huge left turn into the mainstream.
For hard core Police fanatics "Zenyatta Mondatta" was positively HERETICAL! It was so LIGHTWEIGHT!
I mean really, "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da"?
The band had been famous for being DARK! An ALTERNATIVE to the sunniness on the radio...

I only got two right, and I guessed at both. I suck...
I got 10 out of 14, but at least 3 or 4 were just educated guesses.
The Police comment is a little harsh. After all, they had already done some fairly "mainstream" stuff on the first two albums ... I guess it retrospect, the albums flow together more seamlessly than they seemed to at the time!
I just saw that Mark St. John has passed. Not sure if you call KISS classic rock--but if so, it's another entry for your morbid list.

David...yes that part of the article on the Police was harsh but the rest was really good. I guess I should have excerpted something else.
Thanks for telling me about Mark St. John. Never heard of him and he was only with the band for less than a year. That doesn't make him any less important. I will add him to the list (its not just classic rock...I stuck others on there too...)
