Some Genesis Fans not Happy about Phil...

"I've never quite understood the venomous loathing some Genesis fans and rock music fans in general have always leveled at Phil Collins, the man behind that band's most commercially successful period. But of course that's probably because I've never been interested in the least in the weird, quirky, dense and obscure art rock of the Peter Gabriel-led, '70s version of Genesis. So, with apologies to the other camp, this summer's reunion tour featuring the band's core '80s lineup of Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks seems to me to be one of rock's most exciting nostalgia tours of the past few years."

from Steve Peake at About 80's Rock

I've always liked Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, hard to compare the two since they are so different...I guess if I had to pick one it would be Peter.

I feel the same way as Steve; I've never cared for Peter Gabriel that much; and am a big fan of Phil's.

I wouldn't say I have venomous loathing towards Phil Collins but I really can't say I like him. I think once Gabriel left Genesis really lost it, probably most casual listeners would disagree. I obviously have heavy bias towards Prog Rock and with Gabriel they are one of the greatest Prog bands. My favorite Genesis albums are "Foxtrot," "Selling England by the Pound" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" all of which are the Gabriel era of Genesis.

Genesis was essentially a different group after Steve Hackett left-- yes, I said Steve Hackett NOT Peter Gabriel. You see, even after Peter Gabriel left-- Hackett stayed on as guitarist for another 2 studio albums and 1 live album. Those two albums were pretty damn good. It was only after Hackett's departure that Genesis began their shift to the more pop-friendly and commercial sound of their eighties material.

I do like both, but only when I think of them as two seperate groups not as one. The two different incarnations of Genesis do sound drastically different from one another.

I'm not a big fan of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway-- I find it overly self-indulgent and generally over the top-- but I love Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound, and the two studio albums with Hackett (A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering). Check out those last two-- great stuff on those like Ripples, Los Endos, Your Own Special Way, and Afterglow!

Hey, I could have sworn I left a comment here earlier! It said I prefer Peter but like Phil, but really it's hard to compare since they are so unique from one another. I think a concert with Phil and Mike R. would be great.

Bonus question: what is my favorite Mike and the Mechanics song? Here is a hint, I DON'T expect you to know.

I know my favorite is "Living Years". And I'm going to take a stab and say yours is "I Believe (when I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever); just a hunch.

I'll take a stab and say your favorite is Silent Running. I have to agree with Bruce about Living Years... but Silent Running is really good too... All I Need is A Miracle is okay but a little TOO poppy for my tastes.

Bruce - wow, those two are my second and third favorite so good guess!

Darrin...you were suppose to pick up on the clue which was the word "don't" in all caps. That's my fave song by them.

I've never had any issues with Phil's Genesis work, but damn if he doesn't record the same frigging song over and over in his solo career

My too, as Jeff, prefer Genesis when Peter Gabriel was in the band, a little thing to add is that Peter Gabriel during his early solo career has suffered much more than Genesis without him. The albums released by Genesis after "The Lamb" were more than good, when the first solo albums of Peter Gabriel were nothing special.

As perplexio has said, the Genesis real drop was when Steve Hackett left the band

greetz from Italy (we and belgians made Genesis big :D )
