"Contrary to popular belief Rock N Roll is not about sex and drugs. It is about rebellion, passion, breaking free from social norms and letting loose and leaving all of your cares behind."
I was so impressed with it it inspired a post on my other blog, Writing from the Inside Out,
On a comment left there David had this to say:
With that definition of rock, I can see why you and I and so many others here have a general disdain for so much of the "mainstream rock" these days. It matches very few of these things in the definition.
NOW A QUESTION FOR YOU!
What bands do you think exemplify Jeff's definition?
(by the way, if you are NOT reading the two blogs mentioned above, you are missing out on some good writing, and if your not reading my other blog....I'm sad :(

Some possibilities:
Back in the day, The Stones. The Mighty Zep. The Who.
More recently: Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses.
These are the first ones that come to mind ...

I wouldn't put the Crue on this list, mainly because they made no secret of the fact that the sex and drugs were very much a part of the lifestyles they lead, and a big reason why they got into music. Nikki was clinically dead for 5 minutes, for pete's sake, and Vince was responsible for the death of Razzle(Hanoi Rocks) because he was driving drunk.
I'd put bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and the early Sabbath on my list.
I agree with it all for sure. I always say some of the best music says "fuck you" without ever using the words. The Ramones come to mind, as does PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, stuff like that.
Geez, you guys are such metal heads!
I hate to disagree with you David, but I have to agree with Bruce about Crue.
Ray, Hmm interesting thought but to me it's not so much that they were saying FU, but showing that their passion for life, for peace, for social change, I think of U2, Dylan, Bruce for those things....and some of the old 60's bands.
There are definitely the FU bands out there, but they aren't my fave. You know I'm all about love, not war :)
I think some more recent bands and artists are Rage Against the Machine, Marilyn Manson, and Radiohead.
Some older bands...well there are so many but some are Hendrix, The Clash, and Dylan.
Through the ages I think the following bands/musicians exemplified rock:
Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, The Guess Who, The Doors, REO Speedwagon (at least in the 70s), KISS, Def Leppard, Guns 'n' Roses, Collective Soul, and Third Eye Blind (to name a small handful)
