Bruce at Mindcrimes has the tour dates for Rush listed on his blog - Ticketmaster doesn't even have any LA dates listed yet but there are 3 here in So Cal and I was happy to see that they will be playing in Irvine - right by my house. Of course I have to go - but this time before I spend a ton of money on tickets I am going to make sure I have someone to go with who is willing to pay their own way (i.e. my sister)

I may end up SELLING one of my Roger Waters tickets and going alone. That sounds depressing, but it really doesn't bother me, I rather go alone than with someone who didn't like the music.

What about you....
Would you ever go to a concert alone?

an unrelated question: a lot of people hold the opinion that Neil Pert is the "best" drummer out there - what do you think?

I actually have gone to a concert alone once because nobody was willing to pay the ticket price. I actually might find myself going to a concert alone again this year when I go to that hip hop festival to see Rage. None of my friends seem to want to see a hip hop festival, and I really can't blame them.

Is Neil Pert the best drummer? I wouldn't argue against that but he isn't really my favorite.

Yes, I've been to two concerts by myself; Peter Frampton in '76 and Clapton in '90. I did run into a few people I knew at the Frampton concert, but Clapton was farther away in Greensboro, plus I had to drive in from Nags Head, so I knew no one.

You already know my feelings on Mr. Peart. I will say this, though... if Neil wasn't around, I'd have a hard time choosing between Phil Rudd of AC/DC and Danny Carey of Tool. Those two guys are great in their own right.

I would have to say Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater is the best drummer out there.

I don't think I'd ever be put in the position ... but I'd see Rush alone, as well as Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel, and the Police. Maybe others, too.

I can only put a couple of other drummers in the same category as Neil. One is Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater, another is Phil Collins (from his 1971-1980 work with Genesis, which is mind-boggling at times; after that he started to focus more on songwriting, piano, and other things and failed to use the drumming talent he has). Some other potential candidates are Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, and Danny Carey. But I don't think they quite hit it.

I've been to 2 concerts alone-- Chicago live at the Tower City Amphitheater in Cleveland, OH and King's X/Joe Satriani/Dream Theater also at the Tower City Amphitheater, both concerts were in 2002. I hadn't yet moved from Ohio to Illinois, Toni & I were still dating long distance, and even if we had been together at that point I doubt she would have gone to the Dream Theater show with me.

As for drummers, Neil Peart is excellent, there's no denying it. And I would/will say that the best TECHNICAL drummer out there is either Neil Peart or Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater (have to agree with David on his assessment there). But the best GROOVE drummer was the late great Jeff Porcaro, nobody could play in the pocket like that guy. He wasn't as technically proficient as Peart per se, but there was just something about him... I mean there's a reason he was playing on Steely Dan albums and tours in the early-mid 70s when he was ONLY 16!!!!

There's a story that former Toto bassist, Dave Hungate, tells about the first time he met Jeff (keep in mind he's about 6-7 years older than Jeff). It was at a Steely Dan session. Hungate heard this drummer in the other room and either Fagen or Becker told Hungate it was Jim Keltner (who was one of the top studio drummers in the 70s). So the drumming stopped and Hungate was expecting Keltner to walk through the door... instead walks this 16 year old kid-- Jeff Porcaro. It's so sad about him. He died WAAAAYYY too young (38). :'-(

Well guys I'm glad I am not the only person to go to a concert alone...even though I haven't gone yet. The offer remains...any one of you is invited to go with me :)

You listed some great drummers. I have a saved a bunch of videos of drummers and have most of the ones mentioned here in addition to Mitch Mitchell, another one of my personal faves. I need to figure out how to make a link specifically to those videos....

I had an ex that wouldn't go with me at times so I went alone. Always had a great time. I saw Eric Clapton the first time that way and it didn't take away from the experience at all. All in all I probably went to 3 or 4 shows by myself. There were always friendly people around me and I had a wonderful time. Go!

I will go as far as saying Neil Pert is one of the best. I don't believe there is best when it comes to art and music. There are all kinds of great artists in all kinds of great genres.

Neil Peart is always fun to air drum too, but Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford are the best (rock) drummers I've ever heard.
