Free Music?

Has anyone out there ever tried any of the advertised "free" music downloads, like this one: My Music

You pay a very minimal fee and then can download as many songs as you want. It seems too good to be true after giving iTunes .99 for every song I buy.

Any opinions out there? I'd love to hear what others think.

News Flash!

HMmmmmmmmmmmm?

I have to interupt this history lesson on the music of the 60's to announce that ticktes for Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz just went on sale. Should I? I've only seen Aerosmith seven times but that was back before they "grew up" and Lenny...LOVE him. He plays music right?

A Review of Rock N Roll in the 60's

So you were born in the 80's and can't understand why your parents keep that old box of vinyls in that cardboard box in the garage - they'll never listen to them again!

For one reason they are too scratched and for another - who the heck has a turntable? How could people even stand to listen to the quality of music turntable would provide?

Ahhh, vinyl. Those were the days. The Beginning of music as we know it today.

No matter what genre you prefer, their are roots back to the 60's:

Folk

Surf
LA Rock
Rock
British Invasion
Rock

Motown

Folk Rock

Progressive Rock

Arena rock

Acid Rock

San Fransisco Rock

Did I forget any combos? Acid Folk Surf Rock?
I'll see what I can dig up that may get some of you interested in the 60's. There was a lot more the the 60's than The Beatles, The Stones and Hendrix :)

Do You Believe in Magic?

The 60's. I wasn't actually old enough to to appreciate the era, but love the music and the colorful history of the culture back then.

Here is the first part in a series on music from the 60's.

Take a look at The Lovin' Spoonful! Four guys from New York showed up in 1965 at the height of the British Invasion to share their folk/rock and people are still listening to them today!

Jesus Loves Rock and Rollers

The Jesus I love and follow does not condemn people or accuse them of dying young because they were evil.

I ran across this website
and although the statistics are true, the way it's presented makes me very sad and embarrassed. This in not "preaching the good news about Jesus". This is being judgemental and unkind.

The Jesus I know and follow would not condemn the people listed on the attached list, in fact he would hang out with them. That’s right! Jesus always hung out with the people in society that others thought of as “bad” or “low” or “weird”. Today’s equivalents of the folks he hung out with, in my opinion, would homosexuals with AIDS, homosexuals without AIDS, prostitutes, Addicts of all types, Criminals and people with emotional, mental and physical disabilities.

The people Jesus got pissed off at were known as the Pharisees, in 2005 that would be considered people like whoever wrote the linked website. People who “follow the rules” but don’t allow for any compassion and understanding. Jesus called them some pretty harsh things (check out the Gospels for details).

So, my point is that maybe John wouldn’t have got so drunk that night if he had Jesus sitting there with him. Maybe Janis would not have been so depressed and feel so unloved. Maybe Michael would have had some hope and chose not to hang himself. I don’t know. Yes, rock stars do have a shorter life expectancy than the average person, for many reasons. But to suggest that they are evil and will all go to hell and DESERVE it is to slap Jesus in the face.

Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh. What a great old photo of him, wonder what song he was doing? Wonder if he was high? Wonder who owns that hot looking arm in the background?

Thank you Canada!

Two of these bands only had THREE MEMBERS EACH! Can you even believe it with all that incredible rock music?

Wow, here's a thought, this would be the Canadian Rock Dream Team:

Gil Moore, Mike Levine and Rik Emmett playing alongside Alex Lifeson, Getty Lee and Neil Pert!!!

OH MY GOSH, my friend David would think he'd died and gone to Heaven! I think I'll name this band "Triumpant Rush".

I lost a friend in the Great White Fire

I was listening to "Hair Nation" one of my fave stations on Sirius satellite radio, when a Great White song came on (Once Bit, Twice Shy). My memory went back to that horrible day when I opened the local newspaper and saw a picture of an old friend of mine, Scott Griffith. Scott's photo was there because he was one of the victims of the tragic fire that took 100 lives total.

Scott lived up the street from me and he and my brother were buddies. Once we all got into our teens we partied together and he would show off his talents at guitar playing. There was no doubt in our minds that he would make it. He never hit the big time, but he did have a successful career as a musician.

His band here in So. Cal. used to play with Great White a lot, so he became friends with them. That's why he was standing right there at the stage when it happened. The saddest part is that he was a single dad raising his teen daughter on his own. He had overcome a drug/alcohol problem and devoted his life to being a good dad. She lost him that night...and so did his old friends.

Rest in peace, Scott or as your old friends say Rock in Peace

Stairway to Heaven...Backwards

This is kinda weird, kinda cool....

Jeff Miner has a "backmasking" site where you can listen to and read the lyrics of some songs that have been rumored to contain "evil" messages when played backwards! Check it out for yourself.

Happy Birthday, Tina!

Maybe she's not Rock and Roll, but no one can deny this woman rocks! I had the incredible privilege of seeing her back when she was still with Ike (the jerk). It was one of those music festivals where a ton of acts played....I don't remember a single band from that night except for Ike and Tina Turner. She was AMAZING. No one can come close to dancing and singing like her. She's one of my all time heroes. Talk about getting better with age! Love her!

Thank You Lyrics for Thanksgiving

One of my favortie songs of all time....
Plant/Page

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.

When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you
Mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Happy Birthday, Neil!

Neil turns 60 years old today, 11.12.05

Pretty amazing that so many classic rock artist are getting to be senior citizens, yet keep on rocking. Do you have a favorite Neil Young song? I have so many, but if I had to pick just one it would be "Old Man"

The Ozzy of My Generation

Back in my day Ozzy had a very different image than the hard to understand domesticated ex-drug addict old rock-star. He was wild and handsome and dangerous.

I think the show on the Osbourne family shows a side of Ozzy his fans of long ago never would have imagined!

I've never owned an Ozzy album, but my sister used to listen to him constantly. I appreciate his talent.

Intriguing Lyrics

INXS Lyrics

Bitter Tears Lyrics

In the mist
Of my endless search
The best in life
Becomes clear

The rest just begins
To fade by itself
That's a trick I learnt
Though it took so long

Bitter tears taste so sweet
I'm seeing my way
For the first time in years
When the love around
Begins to suffer
And you can't find love
In one
In one another
Push away those bitter tears
Bitter tears

And I thought I was doing no wrong
And I thought I was doing no wrong

In the hour
Of your needs
Lips are trembling
Cause your gonna be free
Realise what were doing here
The time is right to kill your fears

Bitter tears taste so sweet
I'm seeing my way
For the first time in years
When the love around
Begins to suffer
And you can't find love
In one
In one another
Push away those bitter tears
Bitter tears

An I though I was doing no wrong
Push away those bitter tears
Thats what they call doing no wrong
Thats what they call doing no wrong

Push away those bitter tears
Push away those bitter tears
Push away those bitter tears

Thats what they call doing no wrong

BUT...I saw something on there that made me think of you!

they also have other categories and one is "Grease and Grease II"

I bet you could kick some butt and get the highest score possible on that quiz! Go take it and let me know how you did.

And if any of you want to try and beat my score at "Classic Rock Trivia" you'll see me on there! I did pretty good compared to most people :) but not as good as I would have liked.

happy birthday to my iPod

U2 News

From U2 Sermons:

"There's a cover story (on Rolling Stone mag) interview with Bono coming out tomorrow, and some excerpts are up. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing, but you could have knocked me over with a feather when I came to his relaxed evocation of a highly technical (and even more highly debatable) Koine Greek vocabulary distinction beloved of a certain segment of Pentecostalism. No, I'm not kidding: Rolling Stone, meet Logos and Rhema.

Have I ever mentioned that I love concerts? Especially Bruce concerts...

October 15, 2005

Two comments:

1) I think he's one of the top FIVE guitar players
2) I think he and Valerie looked like bro and sis more than husband and wife

Two questions:

1) Who are your top five guitar players?
2) Have you ever seen Eddie play UP CLOSE and persona, like from in front of the STAGE? (got tickets by accident - true story! will share details later)

Did you ever make a mix tape?

If you don't get the above question you are very young and can skip this post.

BUT, if you do remember those days of selecting the perfect mix for your cassette tapes....read Beckeye today and get a blast from the past :)

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan Posted by Hello

Tears for Stevie.....

I was searching for a photo of Stevie when I came across this. WOW. This really spoke volumes to me. He truly was one of the greatest blues/rock guitarist...the person with this tattoo wanted to communicate that permantely on his arm! Awesome!

I had the complete and total honor of meeting Stevie once. It was at the Golden Bear in Huntingon Beach. It was a hot summer day and when we got there in the evening the sun was setting over the ocean. Very California. But walking into the club, suddenly it felt like we were worlds away in a real Blues club. The room was dark, filled with smoke and the smell of beer. Stevie came out and just started playing. I don't think he took a break for hours.

Afterwards, my friend, Nuel, and I went up to meet him. I don't think he had smiled once on stage all night, and he was wearing his usual hat...but when we met he shook my hand and gave me a warm smile. I think I just said something stupid like "that was great". I remember noticing that he was totally soaked in sweat, and seemed really wiped out like he had given every ounce of his energy and passion to his performance. Yet in a way, he played like no one else was in the room...just him, his Fender and his band.

We've lost a lot of the great musicians to tragedy. For some reason this one (and Michael Hutchens) got to me the most. I have tears remembering hearing the news. Was it because I had met him? Or did I just resonate with him as a person? I know it was more than the music. He seemed kind of shy and humble to me. He had overcome a drug addiction, he had just started a new tour - this was truly tragic. He so damn good.

The tragic end came on August 26, 1990. Stevie and Double Trouble had just finished a gig that included an encore jam with
Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, and Robert Cray. After the concert they boarded a helicopter bound for Chicago. Minutes after it took off, the helicopter crashed, killing Stevie and the other four passengers. He was only 35 years old.

RIP Stevie Ray

John Lennon - 65 Years Old

ANGRY SICK DISTURBED

but mostly just very, very bummed. Somehow I did not hear about the Conan O'Brien show being dedicated to U2 last night so I missed it. I am going to sign up for every entertainment email possible so this never happens again. I think I may have got an email from VH1 about this but I hit delete before reading. I am mourning, but I have learned my lesson - the hard way :(

I FLIPPIN MISSED IT !

Pearl Jam

When you put Pearl Jam in Google Images this photo comes up. Kinda interesting.

Beckeye has a great review from their concert the other night. She had a helluva time getting there (good story) but she made it.

(They covered one of my all time favorite Springsteen songs, Promided Land, how cool is that?)

I don't listen to a lot of Pearl Jam but want to get more acquainted with them. Trying hard to break out of the 70's/early 80's and expand my horizons. Old music habits die hard.

Carlos Santana

I orgininally posted this in April 2005 with no idea that I would be seeing Carlos and the band on Oct. 14. Can't wait!

Posted by Hello

As I add this I am wondering how anyone can NOT love Santana???
Put on a song, familiar like "She's Not There" and listen to the percussion then listen to Carlos playing his solos, feel the passion. Can you actually sit still during "Smooth"? And the list of "guest" soloist is incredible. Can't wait for their new release in summer 2005!

For Opie Outlaw

I was reading a new blog friend the other day and noticed he had the lyrics to a Youngbloods song posted. So here they are for your enjoyment as well. A group from the 60's that was considered fold and psychedelic.

Best known for the song "Get Together" that goes:
"Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now"

The Youngbloods

Can't get much more 60's than that! Love it.

Bonzo

- gone but not forgotten

John - you are the best, RIP Posted by Hello

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news that Bonzo was....dead? :(

It was my 21st birthday and I was feeling good. Over the weekend my friends have given me the BEST PARTY EVER. I was on the campus of Saddleback College and I noticed a group of people gathered around talking in hushed tones, some of them crying. One guy yelled over to me "Did you here? John Bonham is dead". It was inconceivable that he was dead. This meant there was no more Led Zeppelin (more on that later). How could this happen? People all over campus were talking. This was 1980 - Zeppelin was about to go on a US tour, the first in three years. Rumors were flying about whether or not it was a suicide. The actual cause of death was "choking induced by an alcohol overdose".

It truly was the day that Led Zeppelin ceases to exist. Unlike some rock bands who replace deceased members (The Who comes to mind) Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones ended the band. I admire them because to this day they have turned down the opportunity to make millions of dollars by re-uniting the band but they have stood firm. The ONLY two times the three remaining band members played together was at 1985's Live Aid and the 1988 30th Anniversary concert for Atlantic Records - BUT GET THIS - guess who their drummer was on both those occasions? Jason Bonham. John's son had followed in his dads footsteps since he was a little kid and was chose as the ONLY one allowed to sit in for the BEST DRUMMER who ever lived.
