Ten Mishaps on Stage

Following Steven Tyler's recent tumble, The Classic Rock Blog has listed ten mishaps that have happened on stage and has video clips for each one. Go look, I'll wait here.

Some of those were funny (Brett Michael's, Axl Rose...) but some very disturbing (Noel Gallagher, Kurt Cobain). And I hate to say it but the Beyonce one was comical ... poor girl.

The one with James Hetfield and the last one disturbed me because they both reminded me of the Great White fire that killed members of the band and the audience (including a friend of mine). And of course the worst on stage moment of all time (IMO) is then Darrel Abbot was shot and killed while performing, several others were killed trying to protect him.

I didn't watch all of them.

Can you think of any onstage moments that someone was hurt or made an embarrassing fall? Its never funny to me when someone gets hurt...but like Beyonce and Axl, they just kept going after they fell, you gotta wonder how they felt the next day. OUCH.

Here's one: Krist Novoselic threw his bass in the air after the end of "Lithium" during the 1992 taping of the MTV Video Music Awards. It came back down on his head and he stumbled off stage dazed and confused.

P.S. Speaking of Axl, I hear he denies having plastic surgery....people always make fun of women who have it and come out looking like plastic so I'd just like to point out that it does the same thing to dudes (lets all agree to age gracefully and not mess ourselves up like this!)

I have two, both from the same band (and the same member!) Daniel Johns from Silverchair was hit in the head with a beer bottle during a concert in Santa Monica. He needed stitches. Then in Australia he stage dove but the crowd didn't catch him and he hit his head. He got back on stage but then lost consciousness.

Wow, I'd forgotten how pretty Axl was before he began to have his face chiseled and sanded. Heesh.

I remember hearing about when Elton John got clocked by a thrown piece of pipe, back in his mid-'70s prime. Pretty scary, but he was OK.

Surprising -- but definitely good -- that that kind of thing hasn't happened more often.

Bond, yeah he looks kinda bad.

Bridey, thanks for the comment...the Elton John incident sounds familiar. You're right, its surprising but good that it doesn't happen more often.

Bridey, I meant to add about Axl: yes, he always had (has?) a reputation for being a bit of an ass (or a total complete ass) but I agree, he was a very pretty boy and the pretty face with wrinkles is usually way better than the new plastic ones so many people get.

When I interviewed Joseph Williams in the late 90s he told me a couple of stories about a couple of Toto mishaps at the same exact venue in 2 consecutive years.

This would have been mid 80s (either 85 & 86, 86 & 87, or 87 & 88) not sure which 2 years...

On his way to stage at the Hammersmitt Odeon in Germany Toto bassist Mike Porcaro slipped and hurt his arm. Not realizing the severity of his injury Porcaro played through 3 songs until the pain grew too unbearable to continue. The band stopped the show so a doctor could check out the injury and it was determined that Porcaro had broken his arm. The band had to cancel the rest of the show

The very next year, Joseph Williams goes to start practicing vocal exercises to get ready to go on stage and sing. He was suffering a cold and had been "partying too much" the night before-- when he opened his mouth nothing came out. He'd lost his voice.

When this was brought to the attention of the rest of the band-- there was no way they were canceling at the same venue for the 2nd consecutive year. The doc gave Joe a shot of adrenalin directly into his throat. He went out and gave what is largely considered to be the worst vocal performance of his career. Fans who attended that show have described Joseph's vocals as sounding like "Kermit the Frog gurgling battery acid."

Those stories just floor me-- especially the Porcaro story. Playing bass with a broken arm through 3 songs! That's insane!

How bout the one from Sabastian Bach got hit in the head with the bottle and jumped in the crowd and beat the guy senseless then had the cops called on him?
