Hard Work?

I have been working on a project recently that is taking much longer than I imagined. I will tell you more later because its really not "my project", its for all of us, and I need your help.

It got me thinking. I am unemployed for the first time EVER and admit, I love having free time to write, listen to music and then combine my passions and write about music. Its a bit tough not having an income and watching the savings dwindle away, but jobs are scarce.

Very few people have their dream job, but I did have the fun of meeting Joe Heuer this summer, you may know him better as The Rock and Roll Guru. He's managed to put his love of writing and music to work quite well.

As I cruise around the blogosphere reading your blogs I see so much talent, so many brilliant music critics and writers. Its inspiring. I hope when I am ready some of you will write something for my "project".

I am not trying to be mysterious, its just that I want it to be ready before I unveil it, even though its been a work in progress for a long, long time.

Thanks for reading my blog. I am by no means a great writer like some of you guys because, honestly, I hate reviewing music unless I LOVE it. I have a hard time saying "this stinks" but many of you have mastered the art of critiquing!~

Looking forward to hearing more about your project. Be dure to fill us in.

Yes, I agree with you about criticism. To me it's easier to write about what I like. It's much harder to write about a CD I don't like. So, when people complain that critics love to be negative I disagree. A writer has to like the type of art they are writing about even if they don't love a particular piece. Would you send a writer who hates Springsteen to one of his concerts? No, the end result would not be a fair review. If your a fan of The Boss you're much more likely to get a comment such as, "Bruce was not his usual dynamic self in concert last night." Not a positive review but one that may be accurate about this particular evening.

You got me intrigured too. I looked forward to hearing more about it and good luck!

I agree, it is harder to critque something you don't like. I think to write a fair critque of an album you need to give it a few good listens. If you don't like something it's harder to commit to that second or third spin if it's not working for you.

Have a good one!

Ooh, sounds interesting! I'm guessing that all of us here write about music because we are passionate about it. Bad reviews generally are the product of frustration that it could've been better or the artist has let you down in some way. However, I can't get away from the fact that some of my most read posts are those where I've given 11 out of ten for something or other! We all love to know about great music.

So, what's it all about Barbara?

It was fabulous hanging out with you at Summerfest, Barbara!

I constantly remind people that I'm not a critic or a reviewer. I simply write about the stuff I love. If I don't love it, I don't write about it.

That's the beauty of doing your own thing and making your own rules...nobody else can tell you what you gotta do.

WARNING: Don't get too excited about my project, its not really new its something I have had online for a long time but am trying to improve because its special to me :)

Charlie, Excellent point. But I know that the music reporter of my local paper goes to all the concerts if he likes them or not and I often wonder if he gets it.

Tom, thanks :)

Mike, see above warning.

RBB, you make a good point. Sometimes if I force myself to listen to something someone I know thinks I would like I DO get into it after three plays or so.

Bond, its not that big of a deal, now I feel silly for making a big deal of it!

Obsessive, hopefully I will be done with it today.

Guru, HI !!!!! I think many people would love to NOT have anyone telling us what to do. :)

Since I write both good and bad reviews, I'll state the obvious: awesome albums make you feel awesome, and bad ones -- and recently I've listened to a dozen really really bad ones -- they make you feel like you've wasted your time, and lashing out only seems natural.

Seeing a project through is always a worthwhile exercise, especially if it involves something that you are passionate about. I'll bet that you're just being modest :)

Looking forward to the unveiling!
