I don't like to admit this, but those of you who know me are probably aware that music makes me emotional. As I watched several videos of the late Marvin Gaye, I cried. It was hard to choose just one video to post in honor of his birthday. This one will always be my favorite:
Marvin's father shot and killed him on April 1. One day before his 45th birthday. I remember watching the news, absolutely incredulous, it was a double shock...he was dead at the hands of his own father.
I can't mention Marvin without also pointing out that this man has more raw sensuality in his little pinky than some men do in their entire bodies. Damn.

Truly one of the greats.
Marvin was extremely talented, and his death was indeed a tragedy.
His music has stood the proverbial test of time.
Marvin was, and always will be, one of the true icons in the history of modern music.
Don't be ashamed of crying, music does that to all of us - me included. It's what great about it. I feel sorry for those who aren't moved. They don't know what they're missing!
What a phenomenal voice...I agree with musicobssessive. How can you NOT be moved listening to this.
I have a two CD overview of his stuff that never leaves the car. Incredible talent.
Musicobsessive is right, if the music don't move you, you are missing out. Every time i watch the video of What's going on it blows me away.
...And James Jamerson on bass--- fugetaboutit!
rock and roll history's mention of James Jamerson reminded me of something; if you haven't seen the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, the story of the Funk Brothers, go out and buy the DVD now. They were the studio/backup band for most of the big Motown stars back in the day, and the film is a wonderful tribute to these extremely talented musicians.
Diver, THANKS! I will check that out for sure!
I remember hearing about the news of Marvin Gaye's murder on the radio on the way home from Showbiz Pizza Place. Yet another case of wondering what might have been.
Unholy Diver is right about "Standing In the Shadows of Motown". I just pulled the DVD set off my shelf as reminder to watch it this weekend.
By the way, I really like the new blog design Barbara!
