John Fogerty - Revival

I was asked to review the new John Fogerty CD, Revival, and in two words: It Rocks. I admit I am a bit surprised by how much I enjoy it. I forgot how much I like this "Southern Swamp Rock" sound.

I have listened to it a few times now and am reminded what a talented artist John is. His voice is so distinct, hard to believe he's not from the South (he's a Californian like yours truly).

He created a sound back in the late 60's with these CLASSIC songs: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Rockin' All Over the World," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Born on the Bayou" and "Fortunate Son". This is his first solo album in 35 years!

Revival is Fogerty's first album of new material on Fantasy following a very public 30-year battle with the label over his catalog. The reconciliation led to the first complete retrospective of his career, The Long Road Home, which came out in late 2005. Fogerty calls seeing the Fantasy logo on his new record is nothing short of "surreal."

THE ROCK 'N' ROLL HALL OF FAMER'S FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL ON FANTASY RECORDS IN 35 YEARS IS HIS 'TRUEST' SOLO RECORD

So mark your calendar's for October 2 and buy a copy of this CD when your standing in line at Starbucks for your Latte Grande. (somehow Fogerty and Starbucks don't seem to go together).

Trivia "(John) Is a staunch opponent of president George W. Bush's policies. Ironically, Bush has called "Centerfield" his favorite song, and it is reportedly one of the songs on Bush's iPod. Although not a supporter of his, Fogerty was reportedly amused by this."

Hello Layla!

I dig your blogsite here.

Here's a treat, if you haven't seen it already.

Watch the brand-new music video for "Don't You Wish It Was True" from the CD Revival:

I got a copy of this for review also. I should have something up soon, but my initial reaction was that it was good, but not his best work. He has been able to stick to his sound without it getting old and I don't think that changes here.

Wasn't Fogerty once sued for plagiarizing himself?

After he left CCR, one of the songs on one of his solo albums had inadvertantly "stolen" a riff from one of the songs he wrote and recorded with CCR. His solo material was on a new label and his CCR material was still licensed to his previous company so they sued him for plagiarizing something he himself wrote...

I believe I heard about that on the CCR Behind the Music special a few years back.

A man who released numerous fantastic solo albums in these 35 years (he is said by you to have released none) doesn't deserve this shit ("This is his first solo album in 35 years!")

In response to the previous post from Anonymous:

I partially agree with that comment. It is apparent to my read that Layla mistakenly confused the Concord/Fantasy press release found at Fogerty's website, of "Revival is Fogerty's first album of new material on Fantasy following a very public 30-year battle..." with the mistaken notion that "This is his [Fogerty's] first solo album in 35 years!"

I will also point out, to my knowledge this IS Fogerty's first album in 35 years containing completely new Fogerty penned tunes, with no covers and no previously released material as filler. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have broad shoulders and a thick hide.

In closing: I don't feel that Layla's intentions were to be disrespective. I do think it's going a little overboard for Anonymous to go as far as to imply that the author is somehow slinging "...shit" or purposefully treating Fogerty negatively.

Old Coot,

Thanks for coming to my defense in this. I would never intentionally put misinformation on my site.

As for anonymous, I notice you leaving quite a few negative comments here - is it because you don't like me personally? If so, who are you and what have I done to offend you?

OK, Old Coot, time to correct your post re first album in 35 years with all-new material. Let's see if I manage to get this right:

1985 Centerfield
1986 Eye Of The Zombie
1997 Blue Moon Swamp
2004 Deja Vu All Over Again

All studio albums filled with Fogerty originals. No covers, no remakes.

I'll admit the bunch of live/Greatest Hits/compilation albums may play a part in the feeling that there's very litlle new stuff released. Also; most Fogerty songs sound like a Fogerty song. "Hey, haven't I heard this one before? No? It's so goood!" ;-)
