STEVE MARRIOTT

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His voice was deeply soulful, with just the right amount of grit. The peaks in the career of this consummate showman straddled the late sixties into the early seventies. He was more than ten feet tall in terms of the work that he turned out with Small Faces and Humble Pie. Robert Plant and Rod Stewart would likely concede that his singing style had a great impact on both of them.
Steve Marriott packed quite a bit of living into his 44 years, though his time in the limelight was little more than an afterthought by the early 80s. Bad deals and substance abuse proved to be his undoing. It is not a happy epilogue to tag onto the career of someone who was so very gifted.
If you are already a fan, I'm preaching to the choir.
For the uninitiated, check this out. You'll soon be adding another touch of brilliance to your music collection.
If you can get your hands on the Small Faces "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" disc and Humble Pie's "Live at the Filmore East" set you'll be off to a fantastic start.
I recently played the Small Faces "You need loving" for a friend that had never heard it, and it totally blew his mind.
Anyone out there in internetland who digs Led Zeppelin NEEDS to hear this version (If you don't alrady have it.)
It'll change your life.
His voice was amazing. It was very sad to hear that he died in a fire in his house. I remember a few years after there was a big concert in his memory.
i saw him at his lowpoint in 1985 at a tiny club called the rock garden in covent garden..he had his new band'packet of three'...it was brilliant and out of step with the times....his band were old and bearded in dungarees,but they had more soul,funk and rock,than any of the smug over dressed new breed.
the club wasnt even half full.
but today they talk and listen to steve marriott,which goes to show....it takes time for people to see whats what.
In my top 5 vocalists of all time.Steve will never get his due among the listening sheep , only the musicians.....nobody will ever sound like him.a perfect combo of British smoke/whiskey rasp and stunning vibrato....why did he have to smoke at bedtime? Humble Pie Live at the Fillmore is a close second to Allmans at the Fillmore for best live album of all time..IMHO.
I think Steve Marriott's voice was at it's most amazing at around 19 or 20. The best musical gift you can give to a fan of 1960's music who has never heard them is simply to say "Small Faces - youtube 'em."
I have only recently found the pie - after 20 yrs of Led Zep and nearly just as long with Guns and Roses, Stones. I thought Robert Plant was the god of gods...but sorry Percy, you still have the most primal scream in rock and the best looks, but Steve Marriot is untouchable....damn, the soul and incredible power and ability to deliver....god damn! Second to Elvis.....just incredible
