IT MIGHT GET LOUD - I can't wait for this!

Sony Picture Classics's new Rock and Roll documentary called IT MIGHT GET LOUD. The film "tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos – The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and Jack White (The White Stripes).

"Rarely can a film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos – The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and Jack White (The White Stripes). It reveals how each developed his unique sound and style of playing favorite instruments, guitars both found and invented. Concentrating on the artist’s musical rebellion, traveling with him to influential locations, provoking rare discussion as to how and why he writes and plays, this film lets you witness intimate moments and hear new music from each artist. The movie revolves around a day when Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge first met and sat down together to share their stories, teach and play."

What do you guys think of The Edge as a guitar player? To me he plays the same thing on every song and axemen like White and Page can blow him away.

Charlie, I respectfully disagree. And from the preview clips I have seen for this documentary, I believe folks are going to see a far different side of The Edge.

about The Edge: I love the sound and style he's created. I think he's so mellow and laid back (and a bit overshadowed by dear Bono) that maybe it goes unrecognized, but he's definitely a great guitarist in my opinion.

Charlie,

The Edge isn't an in-your-face guitarist, not like the other two in the slightest; he's more like Brian May of Queen but without the bombast. His notes are clean; he arpeggiates the crap out of everything, and he uses delays and overdubs like they're milk in cereal. It's more about texture, I think, with him than anything. Could he rock out like a 70s rock god? Sure, but he wouldn't be as good. And while I think this film will be interesting, the coupling could have been better. Jack White is not an icon; Page's has been overblown, and the Edge is known as that guy who plays guitar next to Bono. Ok, maybe this will be interesting.

Hatter, great comment.

"Page is overblown?" Well, maybe he has had way more than his fair share of backstage hummers in his day...but dammit he deserved them!

If you mean MUSICALLY overblown then I gotta disagree. The Mount Rushmore of rock guitar is:

Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen
and the 4th spot is waiting for SOMEBODY to own this era of lousy hip pop/Lady GagGag stuff going on today. Jack White? He gets props for being from Detroit...and for making unique noise with his axe, but I don't think kids wish they could grow up to BE him.

I like The Edge, but to me the guy who owns the 'middle' section of the 3 guitar eras is Edward Van Halen. Period.

Anon, good comment, thanks. Yeah - Eddie is one of the all time greats.
