My favorite new band of 2008 was Back Door Slam. The first time I heard Davy Knowles sing (knowing he was only a kid) I was blown away! I hadn't been that impressed by a new artist since...well, since I heard Jonny Lang for the first time (no offense to Jonny, I love him, but I think Davy's got a rare talent that we don't see often).
Sadly, the band broke up recently. That's the bad news.
The good news is that Davy will continue his career as a solo artist and has been has been recording new material in Los Angeles with none other than Peter Frampton producing. And he's going on tour opening for Jeff Beck beginning April 6 in Scranton, PA.
Be looking for a review of BACK DOOR SLAM—LIVE FROM BONNAROO—a double vinyl album that I will be receiving from Blix Street. Can't wait for that!

AWW man! Back Door Slam broke up!? That sucks. I had high hopes for the band. I'll be looking forward your review on the Bonnoroo album:)
Pity about losing another promising band. Looking forward to hearing Knowles' solo material, though.
I saw them live last summer at an outdoor festival. They were Cream revisited! Too bad they're gone already.
Opening for Jeff Beck, huh? That's impressive.
Drew, I was so bummed to hear that about BDS too :(
Sean, I know Davy will be great solo but I wonder how his long time band mates feel?
Charlie - Cream re-vistied! Sounds incredible.
SiS, very.
Will need to check them/him out
Never heard of this kid, but if he's opening for Jeff Beck then he must be pretty darn good!
I'm gonna have to check him out.
My son Ryan and I saw BDS last November, supporting Gov't Mule. We were absolutely blown away. Davy Knowles is without doubt one of the finest young guitarists on the scene. Any a really great person as well. He took time to chat with me and my son and really inspired Ryan, who is an 11 yr old guitar player. Getting the call to open for Jeff Beck say a lot about Davy's talent.

I think I heard about this somewhere :-)
Anyway. Great to see Mr. Frampton producing! 2 of my faves...a old fave and a new one together!
BDS at roo? Maann would love to hear that.
I haven't sprung for their first albumm yet, but it's on the list. Fromm what I've read, this band made creative, interesting and well made music.
I'll also look forward to your review of the live album. These guys seem naturals for a good live one.
Bond - you will like him!
Classic, yes, he's good. If you hear him let me know what you think.
Jay, so glad you stopped by and shared about your son. I did a post on him. Impressive.
Mike, yeah, yeah I know...you knew before I did :)
Larry - WOW! Its a surprise to see you here, a pleasant one!
davy knowles is very good for a kid. i saw him last night with the rhythm devils. unfortunately, in my opinion, he is not up to snuff class-wise to play with bill kreutzman, mickey hart, sikiru adepoju, keller williams, and andy hess. a hair-jelled little kid singing jerry's tunes is just not right. i left after an hour. i was irritated more than anything. oh how the mighty have fallen, i thought to myself. sorry...
Anon,. thanks for sharing your opinion. I almost went to that show last night in San Diego. I will admit, I don't think I would enjoy him as much doing someone else's music. I hope he stays true to himself.
