Jasso & Garcia

Just got back from The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano for a night of great music. I bought tickets for Donovan Frankenreiter, and he was good. But the two guys that opened for him, Jasso and Garcia, blew him out of the water with their talent. I love musicians that have passion, talent and are not arrogant. You could tell these guys were real.

Jasso's vocal range is off the charts. I just sat their wondering why he's not famous. They did a cover of Light My Fire that was incredible...it was slow, acoustic and included castanets that rocked. I know what you're thinking: castanets don't rock...but I swear the way this guy played them, they did. Unfortunately they don't have that cover on their CD, but I am buying it anyhow. So, these guys are my new favorite local talent!

I would not classify them as classic rock, but its an honor to review them on my blog. I can't wait to see them live again.

This is probably old news by now, but for I for one am planning on using Amazon whenever possible! I've been an Amazon customer since the OLD days when I had dial up and they sold only books! Most songs are .89 or less vs .99 on iTunes.

The Bee Gees, Lenny Kravitz, Reviews, News

I received two CDs to review today and have already come to a conclusion:

Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970
Rating: ** out of *****

I suppose there are songs on it that would appeal to fans of that era, but personally, I have no need for yet another compilation CD from any band. Enough is enough. If we like the music we already own it (imo).

The Bee Gees - "Greatest"
Rating: *** out of *****

Ok, so I just said above I had no need for another compilation CD, but this is the first time in my life I have actually LISTENED to The Bee Gees and I'm a bit surprised at how much I like them (if only Barry's voice were a few octaves lower....)

I am familiar with all their hits (like it or not I think most people are). BUT there were some songs on here I'd never heard before that were very enjoyable. Plus you can never hear Stayin Alive too many times! Come on seriously, you have to like that song! John Travolta dancing in a white suit - what more needs to be said? (back me up here, Becky!)

News taken from Martin's Weekly "80's Nut Newsletter"

1.
Lenny Kravitz has been finishing work on his eighth studio album, It's Time For A Love Revolution, due out Feb. 8th. Kravitz is also expected to perform two songs during NBC's New Years Eve with Carson Daly.

2. Rik Emmett of Triumph and Michael Shotton have signed a recording deal
with Escape Music Ltd. for their project Airtime. Their new album will be titled Liberty Manifesto when released on Nov. 19th.

(if anyone can guess what Rik Emmett and Lenny Kravitz have in common I will post a pic of myself dressed in a tiger print lyrca outfit with a David-Lee Roth hair-do and David Bowie boots from 1982)

How did music change your life?

For those of us who love music, there are few things in life that compare to the exhilaration, the passion, the high or a good concert of even a good song on your radio. Of course one of the things that surpasses it (for me anyhow) is love/romance/intimacy.

It carries me places that I wish I could go in "my real life" and one question that has haunted me for years is:

Would my life be different today if I had not spent my youth drenching myself in music and song? Would some of my expectations be more realistic? Did the romance and lure of the music have a negative affect - or is it "all good"?

I'd love to hear your thoughts if anyone "gets" what I am saying here.

Happy Birthday, Bruce

This is insane! This is why I love him so much. Happy 58th!

Hearing this song, "Trapped", live back in '85 was un-f'ing real.

I can't wait to see him next month on October 29th!

Thank you David Bowie

I was going to write on this myself but Maclolm has it down over at his blog. Read it here. I may also point out that Malcolm is an African American. I am still in shock over this story. If you have not been following it just let me ask you this one question:

Which of these two things disturbs you more:

1) Three white college guys putting nooses on the limb of a tree at the college campus to indicate that its a "Whites only" tree to sit under

or

2) A black college guy beating up one of the above guys for doing it. (5 other black guys joined in and stomped on the white guy, but that's after the fact). The white guy was taken to the hospital, released and went out that night.

This happened recently not in the 1950s.

Here's the kicker: One of the men, Mychal Bell, is being tried as an adult in this case (2nd degree battery) and even though the case has been dismissed he is still in jail.

David Bowie donated $10,000 to his legal defense fund.

I know there are more "facts" to this case but its appalling that someone would do such a thing as hang nooses on a tree limb and not be PUNISHED severely for it. That is a hate crime if I ever saw one.

I guess I live a sheltered life here in CA because I don't see racism very often, apparently it's alive and well in the South.

Welcome Back David Amulet!

You were missed!

For those of you unfamiliar with David, he's a famous author that often comments on my blog! He's been on vacation and undoubtedly has an interesting post up about it....

John Fogerty - Revival

I was asked to review the new John Fogerty CD, Revival, and in two words: It Rocks. I admit I am a bit surprised by how much I enjoy it. I forgot how much I like this "Southern Swamp Rock" sound.

I have listened to it a few times now and am reminded what a talented artist John is. His voice is so distinct, hard to believe he's not from the South (he's a Californian like yours truly).

He created a sound back in the late 60's with these CLASSIC songs: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Rockin' All Over the World," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Born on the Bayou" and "Fortunate Son". This is his first solo album in 35 years!

Revival is Fogerty's first album of new material on Fantasy following a very public 30-year battle with the label over his catalog. The reconciliation led to the first complete retrospective of his career, The Long Road Home, which came out in late 2005. Fogerty calls seeing the Fantasy logo on his new record is nothing short of "surreal."

THE ROCK 'N' ROLL HALL OF FAMER'S FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL ON FANTASY RECORDS IN 35 YEARS IS HIS 'TRUEST' SOLO RECORD

So mark your calendar's for October 2 and buy a copy of this CD when your standing in line at Starbucks for your Latte Grande. (somehow Fogerty and Starbucks don't seem to go together).

Trivia "(John) Is a staunch opponent of president George W. Bush's policies. Ironically, Bush has called "Centerfield" his favorite song, and it is reportedly one of the songs on Bush's iPod. Although not a supporter of his, Fogerty was reportedly amused by this."

Led Zeppelin Reunion - ITS REALLY GONNA HAPPEN

I've mentioned before that I admire Zeppelin SO MUCH for disbanding after John's death. The band no longer existed. There is only one person on earth suited to fill his shoes and that, obviously is his son, Jason.

So in response to their concert coming up in London all I can say:

PLEASE COME TO LOS ANGELES, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Politically Correct Lyrics - Part One

You know what I love about this blog? The comments you people leave! I could spend all day responding in depth to some of the things said here. I can rarely find anyone in person to get into good discussions with, but here something always sparks a thought.

This thought was sparked by Jeff's comment on the last post. He shared a lyric from John Lennon's song "Woman is the Nigger of the World". I just cringed typing the "N" word. Its considered to be such a negative word that books containing it have been banned from school libraries, its not allowed to be said on radio shows, its rarely used because of the controversy surrounding it.

Even back in 1972 when John and Yoko (she coined the phrase) recorded the song, it was banned from many radio stations even though the message behind the song was something a lot of people agreed with.

My question is: Do you think John would use that same term today in the title/lyric of a song?

Part Two on another day. My mind works faster than my energy lasts, if that makes sense.

Chrissie Hynde's Birthday

Luckily one of my new daily blog reads, Pop Culture Dish, reminded me that it's her birthday today. I love this woman. She IS rock and roll. If I were a musician, she would be my role model. I am so embarrassed by some female "musicians", but am proud to point people to the REAL DEAL.

Happy birthday, Chrissie, you ROCK!

Time for a Quiz!

I like the quizzes over at Dave White's "About Rock" site so I picked one out to share with you. I did pretty bad on this one, only got 50% right! So expect another one soon. I am going to take all of them till I get a high score, just to make myself feel better!! This album cover is the topic of one of the questions, I got it wrong :(

Lucianno Pavarotti

This will be the first and probably the last time I have had opera on this blog - but someone with this amount of talent transcends genre. Even more shocking - I didn't think I'd ever have Michael Bolton on here either.

To quote Bono:

"SOME CAN SING OPERA; LUCIANO PAVAROTTI WAS AN OPERA"

He will be missed. Its a sad day in music.
