2009 Grammy Awards - Ho Hum

I am not a fan of music awards, they are silly. I like it when REAL PEOPLE vote for who they like or other musicians vote for their PEERS but all other music shows are just for show. Its all very corporate and politically correct and biased. YET, I still enjoy watching and this year there are going to be a few good performances including U2 and Radiohead!
If I were voting here are my choices: I left most of the categories off my list because I just don’t care about country, pop, rap, etc.

BEST NEW ARTIST – the only one I listen is Adele so I guess that’s my vote.

Adele
Duffy
The Jonas Brothers
Lady Antebellum
Jazmine Sullivan

ALBUM OF THE YEAR – Radiohead hands down, for some reason the AK RP duo has always creeped me out and Chris Martin turned me off to his band and the others – don’t listen to them.

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Raising Sand
Coldplay, Viva La Vida
Ne-Yo, Year Of The Gentleman
Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III
Radiohead, In Rainbows BEST ALTERNATIVE ALBUM – DCforC
Beck, Modern Guilt
Death Cab For Cutie, Narrow Stairs
Gnarls Barkley, The Odd Couple
My Morning Jacket, Evil Urges

BEST HARD ROCK PERFORMANCE – All I can say here is I love Nikki Sixx so let my reputation for being a hardcore rock critic be tainted, but I will vote for him for anything at anytime anywhere no matter what it sounds like….

Disturbed, "Inside The Fire"
Judas Priest, "Visions"
The Mars Volta, "Wax Simulacra"
Motley Crue, "Saints Of Los Angeles"
Rob Zombie, "Lords Of Salem"

BEST POP PERFORMANCE, MALE – Jason

Kid Rock, "All Summer Long"
John Mayer, "Say"
Paul McCartney, "That Was Me"
Jason Mraz, "I'm Yours"
Ne-Yo, "Closer"
James Taylor, "Wichita Lineman"

BEST POP PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCALS – Love me some Marroon 5

Coldplay, "Viva La Vida"
Eagles, "Waiting In The Weeds"
Gnarls Barkle, "Going On"
Maroon 5, "Won't Go Home Without You"
OneRepublic, "Apologize"

BEST ROCK SONG – If you’ve read my blog longer than five minutes you know the answer here, BUT I would vote that way even if I wasn’t “me” ya know what I mean?

Bruce Springsteen, "Girls In Their Summer Clothes"
Radiohead, "House Of Cards"
Death Cab For Cutie, "I Will Possess Your Heart"
Kings Of Leon, "Sex On Fire"
Coldplay, "Violet Hill"

BEST SONG FOR A MOTION PICTURE, TV SHOW, OR OTHER VISUAL MEDIA
"Down To Earth" (Wall-E)
"Ever Ever After" (Enchanted)
"Say" (The Bucket List)
"That's How You Know" (Enchanted)
"Walk Hard" (Walk Hard—The Dewey Cox Story) SONG OF THE YEAR – None of the below
"American Boy," William Adams, Keith Harris, Josh Lopez, Caleb Speir, John Stephens, Estelle Swaray & Kanye West, songwriters (Estelle Featuring Kanye West, artist)
"Chasing Pavements," Adele Adkins & Eg White, songwriters (Adele, artist)
"I'm Yours," Jason Mraz, songwriter (Jason Mraz, artist)
"Love Song," Sara Bareilles, songwriter (Sara Bareilles, artist)
"Viva La Vida," Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion & Chris Martin, songwriters (Coldplay, artist)

RECORD OF THE YEAR - I swear this is why I hate these stupid shows. My pick is Back Door Slam, "Come Home"
Adele, "Chasing Pavements"
Coldplay, "Viva La Vida"
Leona Lewis, "Bleeding Love"
M.I.A., "Paper Planes"
Robert Plant and Alison Kraus, "Please Read The Letter"

Well most of my hits come from folks googling "Chris Martin Twat" so we know where I am on that one!

Best New Artist - Duffy hands down. I adore her album Rockferry.

Album of the Year - Radiohead, Death Cab or My Morning Jacket. Acutally I'd like to see My Morning Jacket get it. Evil Urges is great.

Hard Rock - I am HUGE Zombie fan.

Pop Male - John Mayer all the way.

Duo or Group - Anyone but Coldplay

Rock Song - Would either be House of Cards or I Will Possess Your Heart. Both of which were on my short list of favorite songs from last year. Death Cab is an AWESOME band.

TV - Don't Care

Song of the Year - Agree. None of those. How bout I Will Possess Your Heart or I'm Amazed from My Morning Jacket? This is a really generic and sad line up.

Record of the Year - Well my choices are not on there (see above) but I do LOVE LOVE LOVE Paper Planes.

I would have to go with Starrlight on several:

Best New Artist - Duffy, without a doubt.

Album of the Year - I would be certain here with Plant and Krauss.

Alternative Album - Like Starrlight, I would go with "Evil Urges" by My Morning Jacket.

Hard Rock Performance - Having LOVED early Motley Crue, I was not impressed with this album. I would have to go with Rob Zombie.

Pop Performance (both Male and Group) - I couldn't care less, really.

Best Rock Song - Radiohead

Best Song for a Motion Picture and Song of the Year - See Pop Performance (both Male and Group)

Record of the Year - I can think of AT LEAST five better options, but given that list, I would have to go with Plant and Krauss.

Hard Rock -

I am a huge fan of Robert' and Alison' album. It really got fine production treatment from T-Bone Burnett. It is just different than anything I have heard and I really didnt expect R.P. to sound so good with this type of sound. Good luck to them.

I wish the self-titled song from Clint Eastwoods Grand Torino was nominated. That hit the nail on the head at the end of that movie.

I agree with you about the awards. They are a corporate scam designed to sell their pet albums and typically not about excellent performances.

Awards shows have become nothing more than a slightly higher class of reality TV. They're all bought and sold for, anyway.

Hey Barbara,

I do like the Plant & Krauss thing a lot and it is quite a departure from both singers usual style but I don't understand how it creeps you out.

That said, I agree with you about award shows.

I remember vividly my disgust when the nominees for Best New Artist were Elvis Costello,The Cars,Toto and A Taste Of Honey-(Boogie Oogie Oogie fame).

When Taste Of Honey won I turned it off and haven't watched it much since.

The two final nails in Grammy's coffin for me were Milli Vanilli and Jethro Tull getting the hard rock grammy over Metallica.
