Goodbye to Dan Fogelberg

It's with a very heavy heart that I announce the death of Dan Fogelberg. He died today from cancer, he was only 56. Two weeks ago I had dinner with a friend of Dan's who shared some stories about what a generous and sweet guy he was - an image I already had of him, but it was interesting to hear it from someone that knew him well. The same person told me that it looked like Dan would not be around much longer, but it was still a shock to hear the news. Here are more details for you.

He was the best total musician songwriter that I ever saw and I saw him 10 times. He could do country, bluegrass, blue-eyed soul, rock, folk, classical, and jazz. His lyrics were poignant and adroit; his tunes were legendary. Yet at the height of his popularity, he never won a Grammy or was even nominated for a psuedo pop-rock award. While I was always frustrated that he never seemed to get the credit due him, he consistenly produced some of the finest music ever written and performed.

I'm devastated. I was just thinking of him this week and hoped he was doing better.

A girlfriend and I went on a road trip once to find Dan Fogelberg. It was a hoot and I will always cherish the musical gifts he gave me which are forever in my heart.

Off to cry in my beer and raise a toast to this amazing artist.

Well, that royally sucks. I just heard "Old Lang Syne" the other day, in fact(the only song of his that ever gets played in this musical black hole I live in). I was also a big fan of the album he did with Tim Weisberg, "Twin Sons From Different Mothers".
R.I.P. Dan...

Arlen, you have my condolences,I remember that he's one of your favorites and it just hurt so much to lose someone that had provided great music to our lives.

Terry, I was hoping he'd get better. Very sad. I would love to hear about that road trip someday! So sorry. Sigh.

Bruce, yep, royally sucks for sure.

He had an aura. Beyond the insightful lyrics and compelling melodies, he just gave off this unique musical aura that had a life of its own. Thankfully, that part will stay here with us.

Take the roads that I have walked along, looking for tomorrow's time,
peace of mind ...

I love story-telling songwriters. And Foglberg was the best story-telling songwriter since Harry Chapin.

Since I had no idea that Dan had prostate cancer, I was shocked by the news of his passing. My favorite song was the rocker "Language of Love". Since I was only familiar with his soft rock side, "Language of Love" was a pleasant surprise.

That is so sad. He was so young. I'm not familiar with his music, but it sounds like he was a great artist.
I'm going to look him up.

I hear that Stephen Stills was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer as well. I dearly hope that things work out differently for him. :(

I am saddened by this, he was way too young.

I remember the songs "Longer" and "Key Largo", not my favourite artist, but I think he was talented...

Are you kidding?!!! "Key Largo" is not a Dan Fogelberg song!!! I am growing quite irritated with the "soft rock" labels that most of the obituaries are using to describe Dan's work. His hit singles that were played on the radio may have mostly fit this label, but his body of work is much, much more diverse and interesting than "soft rock" and defies an easy classification. He was an enormously talented poet, composer, musician and I have never heard anyone remotely like him. I will miss him very much.

PML,

You're right about Key Largo. I am sorry you have to put up with people that don't appreciate or know Dan's music as much as you. I would feel the same way about one of my favorites.

Thanks for stopping by.
