Poco

Does anyone out there remember the band from the 60's - 80's called Poco? I have a vivid memory of them playing at the Laguna Bowl one Sunday afternoon in the sumer of 198?. I lived in Laguna Canyon which was basically right across the street from the Bowl. Rather than paying to see the concert, we (my roommates and neighbors) decided it would be fun to sit on our roof with a plenty of beer and make a party of it. It was a great concert, they played all their hits, but for the life of me, I can't think of a single one at the moment.

Yes, I remember Poco quite well. I liked them a lot, in fact. That was when I first saw Timothy B. Schmidt, and Rusty Young was one of the best slide guitarists I ever saw; on par with the late Lonesome Dave Peverett, IMO.

"Call it Love" was one of their later songs - 1989 maybe, but it was one of my favorite songs at the time.

Although I had heard of them prior, I didn't know any of their music until I saw the 10-part A&E documentary series called "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll". They were on the segment about rockabilly/country rock (included was their performance of "C'mon"). The only other songs I know by them are "Crazy Love" and "Call It Love". Since I like all three of those songs, I need to dig deeper into their catalog.

Since you mention seeing Poco live and Bruce mentioned Timothy B. Schmidt, might I recommend The Last Roundup? This is a live recording from one of Schmidt's last concerts with Poco before leaving to join the Eagles.

Also you might want to check out Illinois Speed Press which featured Paul Cotton who later went on to join Poco (replacing Jim Messina who went on to join Kenny Loggins as Loggins & Messina) after Illinois Speed Press disbanded. Poco even re-did some of Cotton's Illinois Speed Press material when he later joined them.

I love Poco. They never got the commercial success that went along with the talent. They are one of the truly great American bands.
