Smoke on the Water' strikes World Record Chord

This is kinda fun news:

(I noticed several electrics out in the crowd, wonder if they brought an amp - lol)

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (AP) -- More than 1,680 guitar players turned out, tuned up and took part in what organizers say was a world record rendition of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" -- a song that was the first many of them ever learned.

Some came from as far away as California and Germany on Sunday to take part in a Kansas City radio station's effort to break a Guinness world record for the most people playing the same song simultaneously. The record had been 1,323 people playing the same song in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1994.

Full Story Here

Thanks, Erin, for pointing this out to me!

Welcome! When I met my husband he was just learning guitar, and I can't tell you how many time we sat around and I listened to him play that riff, endlessly.

Yep....I think I used to play it too. I wish I could have kept up with the guitar, I've lost everything I once learned :(

"Smoke on the Water" was one of the first songs I learned back when I took lessons. I still play, but I stopped lessons long ago. I have a lot more fun now that I don't worry about being good. "Sunshine of Your Love" was another early one that I learned.

I heard they were actually going to attempt it, it's pretty cool that it was actuall a success. While this wasn't the first song I learned on guitar it was the first one my instructor actually tought me, the first song I ever learned was "Come as You Are" by Nirvana.

Whoa. I simply must, MUST write something about this. I dont' know if I can spare any more time than I've already stolen away from work today ... but sometime soon I just have to mock this somehow ...

Bob, I play "Sunshine of Your Love" on my air guitar several times per week :)

Jeff, that's cause you, my your friend, are from a cool generation of people.

David - sweet, I gave you some fodder for mocking, can't wait to read it.
