Jim Ladd, The Summer of Love

Being from down here in So Cal, Jim Ladd is a well know radio host for KLOS, I am just wondering if any of you have heard of him? I don't know if his nightly show is syndicated or not, but this week he's been doing a series on "The Summer of Love" and its been great. I can almost smell the aroma of incense and marijuana, feel the beads draped around my neck, see the flowers in my hair as I frolicking through a grass field with Jim Morrison...

If you get a chance to listen to it, I recommend it. Great history lesson of the 60's.

I was too young to live it, but I just KNOW I would have been a hippy :)

Anyone recognize these three?

A History of Concert Prices

Jeff's post today over at Imagine Echoes, inspired me to do this. If you click on these you can get the full view but I will detail them for you below. I have LOTS more ticket stubs but I thought this gave a good representation of how things have changed.

Sure the price of everything has gone up, but from paying $5 to $171 over from 1975 - 2005 seems extreme. Especially when you consider that those $171 U2 tickets actually cost me $365 each because they sold out and I had to pay a ticket broker. I would
ONLY do that for U2. Yes you read that correctly I paid $365 to see U2 (and it was worth it, but that is NOT the point!)

1975 - OC Jam featured YES as the headliner, $5.00
1975 - Aerosmith, $6.50
1976 - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, $7.50
1976 - Boston, $9.75
1977 - David Bowie, $9.50
1978 - The Rolling Stones, $12.50
1981 - Van Halen, $9.75
1981 - The Who, $10.00
1982 - Tom Petty, $11.25
1983 - David Bowie, $16.50
1984 - Def Lepard, $13.00
1988 - Michael Jackson, $31.50
(i lost a lot of tickets from 88 - 2002)
2002 - Tom Petty, $65.00
2003 - Bob Dylan, $69.50
2004 - Train, $43.50
2005 - U2, $171.00 !!!

And now for Bruce Springsteen:

1981 - $12.50
1983 - $16.00
1985 - $17.50
1988 - $22.50
1992 - $28.50
1999 - $67.50
2000 - $67.50
2002 - $75.00
2003 - $75.00

Rockin' Girl Blogger!

I got tagged with this on my other blog, little do they know, I really am a Rockin' Girl Blogger !

Cheap Trick - Self Torture

Why do I do this to myself?
Went out to hear a local band that I heard was good (I won't drop their name here cause to be honest they weren't all that great, imo).
So there I am with my glass of white zin alone trying to look like I'm not there to get picked up on by a guy.
Watched people laughing and dancing and having fun.
I have friends...but none that like rock n roll (I know - its crazy)
Drove home thinking about the guy I love(d)? and then this song comes on:

Another night slowly closes in,
And I feel so lonely.
Touching heat freezing on my skin,
I pretend you still hold me.
Im going crazy, Im losing sleep.
Im in too far, Im in way too deep over you.
I cant believe youre gone.
You were the first, youll be the last.

Wherever you go, Ill be with you.
Whatever you want, Ill give it to you.
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon.
Remember: after the fire, after all the rain,
I will be the flame.
I will be the flame.

Remind me to not do that anymore.
I wonder if Robin Zander is still a hottie.

Old Stones Part 2

Okay,...just so ya all don't think I'm unaware of the really great Stones music....here are my fave. All Old. But as I said below, I did love them right up till Tattoo You then kind of lost interest.

OLD Stones

I can't believe how great some of the old Rolling Stones songs are. I am really loving LastFm online radio, it will play songs I have not heard in years...like "Tops" from the Stones....Hello? Do you know how old that is? 1981. Just some random song off the "B" side of Tattoo You. Good stuff.

Foghat Memory!

Foghat rockin' into 36th year!

When I saw this article on "Live Daily" today it brought back a memory. It's been a while since I've shared any of my personal stories about meeting "rock stars" and this one, I have to admit, is a BIT fuzzy. It was a loooooooong time ago (like 28 years!).

But check this out - in the article below there is NO MENTION of Rod Price!!! Either I am going blind and don't see it, or Kym Kilgore left him out of this article. Rod was a founding member, he left in '80 but it was his
"....signature slide playing ability that helped propel the band to being one of the most successful rock groups in the United States during the 1970's. His slide playing was featured distinctly on Foghat songs Drivin' Wheel, Stone Blue, and the group's biggest hit, Slow Ride, which was a top 20 hit in 1976" (from Wikipedia)

Rod he died in 2005 of a heart attack. So why was he not mentioned here? It's really bugging me. I will write Kym and ask him/her what the deal is.

Ok my story:
I was living in Albany, Oregon at the time. The year was 1979. I was only 5 years old. Ok, I was really 19. Anyhow....my boyfriend, Bob, was in two bands at the time, a cover band (the one I was unofficially a part of) and an original band called SLIDER because they were known for having a really great slide guitarist, Kevin, (who idolized Rod Price). So when Kevin heard that Foghat was coming to town he got us tickets AND backstage passes!

This was at a pretty high point in their career so it's rather hard to believe the venue was "The Beaverton Ice Rink", it was so small! When we went back stage to meet the band Rod Price talked to me and Kevin (Bob was busy flirting with the groupie chicks....never date a musician). Anyhow, I don't remember what Rod said, but I recall thinking he was a nice guy.

Classic rockers Foghat are on the road, zig-zagging across the US in support of their forthcoming live album.....

The British blues-rock band formed in 1971 and toured relentlessly for 14 years, scoring several gold and platinum records along the way. After some breaks and some lineup changes, Foghat's original members reunited in 1994, recording "Return of the Boogie Men" and hitting the road once again, according to the band's bio.

The band ground to a halt in 2000 when founding vocalist Lonesome Dave Peverett succumbed to cancer. Foghat's current lineup features Earl, Huhn, longtime bassist Craig MacGregor and guitarist Bryan Bassett.

Happy Father's Day

Happy father's day to all of you who are fathers. The role you play in your children's life is probably more valuable than you will ever realize.

...and to all of you who hope to be some day, I hope you do

....and to all of you who have lost a father, special hugs to you today

....and to all of you who are father's, but lost a child, that must be the hardest loss of all, my thoughts are with you.

Albums that Define

This post was inspired by Bob Vinyl's excellent commentary over at Whole Lotta Album Covers which talks about one of my very favorite albums of all times (you'll have to check it out)

I love it when that happens because lately I haven't had a whole lot to say. Here are three questions for you.

1. Think of one (or 2 or 3) of your favorite bands. If you could suggest only one of their albums to someone that had never heard them, which would it be?

2. Of these bands, which of their albums do you think defines them:

The Doors, Rush, Zeppelin, Metalica, Queen, Van Halen,
Bruce Springsteen, The Stones, The Who

Sex Pistols - 30 Years Old

And I don't mean the band members, I mean the band.
Does that make anyone else feel old? Ugh.

Johnny then:

Johnny now:

Five Days Till Dark Side

Five days left till I see Roger Waters. You still have a chance to go with me, I have an extra ticket! My sister is willing to go, but its so much more enjoyable to go with someone who WANTS to go.

So...

I was surfing around trying to find something interesting to write about, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rock news today.

In fact, its a ho-hum day. Been listening to Coldplay, YES, Carole King and Neil Young today. LOL, not exactly the same genre but each one fit the mood of the hour. I think I will close out my work day with a little Springsteen, old stuff.

Sorry this is such a boring post...I'm running on empty.

Bono and the G8 - "Politics is the art of the possible"

I know, I know....some of you are tired of hearing about him, but I will never tire of writing about him because I stand behind him 100% in what he's doing. I believe he's sincere, that his compassion is genuine. He HAS made a difference by raising money to help fight AIDS in Africa and feed some of the hungry there, that can't be denied because there are facts to back it up.

I also love the music - not just the man. I think u2 is one of the greatest bands for all time and its pretty amazing that after 31 years, the original guys are still together. Its even more amazing that you don't hear scandals involving any one of them - no illegal or immoral activities splashed all over the gossip magazines.

Some people say he's arrogant, maybe he is, but so what? He's not out for his own gain, he's only agenda is to provide aid for those who need it and he recognizes that some of us have more than we need while others don't have enough to survive.

Do you like Bono, dislike him or have no opinion either way?

Here's a clip of the CNN interview with Bono and Bob Geldoff, this is what I am talking about:

Tonight

Well, five minutes till I am off work - then later this evening I am going to go hear the same band I heard last week. They were SO GOOD. I've been listening to Stevie Ray this afternoon to get me in the mood.

What did you do tonight?

Maroon 5 - Question for You

Ok, I LOVE Maroon 5. What can I say? I got totally hooked when "Songs About Jane" came out and thier new CD is almost as good (imo). They are playing locally at The Troubadour! It's a very small, old club in LA

What are some bands you like that are "new" and don't fit into the "Classic Rock" genre?

Smoke on the Water' strikes World Record Chord

This is kinda fun news:

(I noticed several electrics out in the crowd, wonder if they brought an amp - lol)

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (AP) -- More than 1,680 guitar players turned out, tuned up and took part in what organizers say was a world record rendition of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" -- a song that was the first many of them ever learned.

Some came from as far away as California and Germany on Sunday to take part in a Kansas City radio station's effort to break a Guinness world record for the most people playing the same song simultaneously. The record had been 1,323 people playing the same song in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1994.

Full Story Here

Thanks, Erin, for pointing this out to me!

The Ocean

I was talking to someone earlier today about how great Zeppelin is and how neither of us got to see them in concert (I almost did). He mentioned the movie, "Song Remains the Same" so I had to watch some of it tonight. This is high quality footage if you have DIVX.
Here's a link to the video

Good Question...

Bob over at Rock and Roll Meandering Nonsense has an interesting question posted today. I am trying to come up with some answers...but it's not easy. Check it out.

Kurt Vonnegut on Music

About a year before he died, Kurt Vonnegut wrote an article for a newspaper in Scotland. There was some great quotes about music in it:

If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:

THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED
FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
WAS MUSIC

(Music) ... makes practically everybody fonder of life than he or she would be without it. Even military bands, although I am a pacifist, always cheer me up. And I really like Strauss and Mozart and all that, but the priceless gift that African Americans gave the whole world when they were still in slavery was a gift so great that it is now almost the only reason many foreigners still like us at least a little bit. That specific remedy for the worldwide epidemic of depression is a gift called the blues. All pop music today jazz, swing, be-bop, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Stones, rock-and-roll, hip-hop, and on and on is derived from the blues.

No matter how corrupt, greedy, and heartless our government, our corporations, our media, and our religious and charitable institutions may become, the music will still be wonderful.
