September 11 - Springsteen

It's not secret that I love Bruce, I've been a big fan since the '70's and have seen him 15 times in concert - which is not nearly enough by the way!

Over on my other blog I am doing a tribute to John Ueltzhoeffer, he's one of the victims of 9/11. I'll be posting songs from "The Rising" to go with each post. So it only seems logical that I would also mention it here at Layla's Faves.

My question for you - What songs can you think of over the history of rock n roll that have done a good job of speaking to your country (whatever it may be) about an event or or situation that permeated the minds of everyone in your country, or around the world. I immediately think of the song Elton John re-wrote Candle in the Wind after Princess Diana's death.

Bruce Springsteen recorded several songs about 9/11. I will share a few here in the next few days. This first one is said to be written from the perspective of a firefighter that survived but lost several friends in the towers. In contrast to the dark, sad verses, the chorus is a prayer asking that we learn something from these heroes:

(excerpt from “Into the Fire)

The sky was falling and streaked with blood
I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

One song that immediately comes to mind is "Ohio" by CSNY.

Excellent! Oh, that's a really good example. Thanks!

I think Russ probably said the best one "Ohio" by CSNY. Also another great one is "Fortunate Son" by CCR about those who had to go and fight in Vietnam and those born into rich and "important families" who didn't have to fight.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
They send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
They only answer More! more! more!

The Rising is an amazing album.

I think Pearl Jam's "World Wide Suicide" certainly captures what most people are feeling about our current administration. I had to give a shout out to PJ. :)

For me the first song that comes to mind is Red, White, & Blue By Lynyrd Skynyrd of the Vicious cycle CD. Peace and Rock on!
