Rock Gods Didn't Win

The Grammys were held last night and I felt compelled to announce one award they got wrong. Here is a video of a close facsimile of the nominated song/group, in concert. They were nominated for "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group"

It is awful hard to get any of the awards right if the best are not nominated (some of the best were by the way), although I cant argue with what the buying public keeps shelling their hard earned dollars on. The most generic, most bland, most artistically challenged dregs of the music world. My son loved the Lil Wayne-Eminem-Drake performance. We couldnt listen to half the song due to its profanity laced, excised time on the stage. How much do you really have to grab your crotch anyway? Pants on the Ground....Pants on the Ground.....Pants on the Ground!

Well I hope you enjoyed the video. These guys are the epitome of what rock and roll is all about and I'm glad I know their music. They sure dont make em like they used to.

Clapton & Winwood!! I agree with you there. Saw them live this past summer and it was just amazingly ridiculous.

I said this on Sean's blog, but I feel bad for kind of enjoying the Gaga/Elton "Speechless"/"Your Song" medley! I haaaate Lady Gagme, but that was pretty good.
Also loved Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy"/"You Oughta Know" (Alanis cover) performance. Can that girl sing or what!

The Taylor Swift/Stevie Nicks dealio was a TRAIN WRECK. Their voices do not go well together at all.

Clapton and Winwood losing were definitely a setback for me, since they are so much a wonderful duo to see together live ! Though, the nominations were quite good for this category, but I wonder how could Kings of Leon beat Clapton ! Though, Kings of leon are really a good group too :)

Sigh. They rarely get it right that's why I just can't watch the Grammy's.

Alexa - my condolences for having to watch that beautiful song messed up.

I watched the Grammy's this year for the first time in recent memory. I was glad for the nomination, but would have been shocked if they had actually won.

The Grammy's lost their way a long time ago. Its not about the music anymore. More about shock value than anything else.

I have not watched the Grammy's in years...

I knew Clapton/Winwood would not win and would have fallen over if they had...

I was really hoping that Clapton would have Steve when he comes to Memphis, but I think I mentioned it is Roger Daltrey on the bill...but I guess that does not mean Jeff or Steve might not show up as a surprise..it is MEMPHIS ya know! LOL

The Grammies seem to be far more focused on spectacle than on the music. In all fairness the Grammies were very fun to watch. There was a definite focus on performance and showmanship... But I feel that focus comes increasingly at the expense of musicianship. And while there is something to be said for a visually stimulating performance-- isn't music supposed to be primarily an aural experience, not a visual one?

Methinks many of today's musicians have forgotten about that.

I can't watch the Grammys. They just tick me off.

Yea, I agree with Perplexio completely, the performances were great, but no credibility to the music :(

Steve Winwood is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, so I was hoping his collaboration with Clapton would win. Although I still watch the Grammys, I no longer get upset over who gets nominated, who was shunned, etc. Partly because tastes in music are subjective. Also, because the Recording Academy has gotten much better in it's Grammy nomination process. Although there will always be artists who get the shaft, the Grammy's track record is way better than it was during its first 30 years or so of existence. If you go back and look, you will probably be amazed and maybe angered over the many artists/works that didn't get recognized by The Grammys.

To defend myself, I must say that as far as the performances I saw from the Grammy's the Eminem-Lil Wayne-Drake performance was the best. Here's why: Black Eyed Peas - none of them can sing, one guy didn't even sing a solo. Fergie's voice made me cringe every time she opened her mouth. Taylor Swift - also can not sing live. Or at least she couldn't that night. She was off key more than she was on, it was like watching the bad auditions from American Idol. Mary J. Blige - at least she can sing on key, but she always seems to over sing songs. A song as beautiful and simple as Bridge Over Troubled Water doesn't need crazy runs in it. Andrea Bocelli on the other hand was amazing. If it was just him, that might have been my favorite performance of the night. Dave Matthews was another exception, his performance was outstanding. Here's the thing about Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem performance, Eminem is one of the greatest rappers ever to perform. There was a while where he fell off the radar and his lyrics were awful. But in the past year or so, Eminem has made such an extraordinary come back. If you listen to the link I posted on facebook you can hear the unedited version. I think a big problem here is the generation difference. I absolutely agree that Eric Clapton earned the nomination. I have no problem saying that he is a fantastic performer and musician. Eric Clapton is one of the greatest at his type of music. But why is it that rappers are hated just for rapping. What they do takes a lot of talent. Eminem is one of the best because: 1. you can understand what he is saying where most rappers you cannot 2. he is able to rhyme real words with more real words, where most rappers cannot 3. he has risen up above all the stereo types that have tried to hold him back. In my opinion, his performance at the Grammy's was one of, if not the best.
