The Who Video You Must See!

Yet Another Music Blog has a great video of The Who today. Its a performance they did on the Smother's Brother's show (for you youngsters, that was a variety show that aired in the 60's when there was actually real comedy and good music on TV every week!)

Anyhow, this performance is legendary because of what happened at the end. I'll let you go read and see it for yourself.

Please try not to laugh at the hairstyles of the guys, Roger looks like a girl, a very pretty girl; Pete's bangs are so short its embarrassing, Keith looks normal (ironically) and surprisingly I found John quite hot back in the day.....

Those were the days eh? The only problem with lip-synch on TV is that it tended to emsaculate rock bands and make them look a bit silly. Hence the ending I suppose - a bit of 'live' TV.

The alternative was letting them play live and then you get what happened on the 'Lulu Show' in the UK when Jimi Hendrix was allowed to play on live TV, changed the song mid-set and then overran his timeslot, much to the consternation of various TV producers! lol.

Music - Yes! And when Jim Morrison decided to go ahead and sing the true lyrics of Light my Fire on the Ed Sullivan Show! CLASSIC.

Gareth - LOL, that cracked me up! Keith was one of a kind.

Layla - interesting to see that lip-synching on live TV goes way back. Also interesting to note that Keith (John's?) drumkit lacked a standard on almost any kit today: a hi-hat.

Great video and a great song. Wish they had shown more of John doing his bass solos.

Dr. J, I agree - bass players always get the least attention and its a shame because what would music be without BASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember seeing this clip for the first time during the early days of MTV when they would show "Closet Classics". When the E! channel showed reruns of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour", I taped a lot of the musical performances from the show (Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Ike and Tina Turner Revue, Spanky and Our Gang, and The Byrds to name a few).
