The One I Missed....

Somehow in my years of concert going which began in 1975, I never saw Queen. This is a huge regret. I don't know why I never saw them, what happened? Even if I someday get to see Led Zeppelin (with Jason Bonham) I will never say I got to see all the great classic rock bands because I missed Queen.

Off the top of my head, here are th concerts I can remember seeing. Is there anyone obvious missing from this list? I didn't include everyone I've seen, tried to keep it to classic rock. (obviously I was too young to see some of the greats like Janis, Jimi, The Doors and The Beatles)

I hate that I never kept a good list of the concerts I've seen.

I'm with you on Queen. Never saw them, always wish I had.

Wow! You've seen a lot of great bands! I've seen some good bands myself, but none as popular as what you listed.

Michael, I wish I had a better memory for things I NEED to know.

Russ, It has a lot to do with living near Los Angeles AND how cheap concert tickets were back in the day - not anymore :(

That's a pretty impressive list - I haven't seen half those bands, but I did see Queen even though it was an open air concert in Hyde Park 1976 so 'see' is probably a bit misrepresentative. 'Hear from a great distance' is more like it. Pretty good though.

I used to keep a list of gigs many years ago but I damned if I can find it now and trying to remember everything is not something my aging memory can cope with these days!

wow barbara that pretty impressive, when did you see van, what was it like, he's someone i would lvoe to see but havent (by the way, how did you get your labels to lok like that)

Very impressive list. By any chance do you remember what Floyd tour you saw?

Thats a brilliant list!
Like a schoolboy I have kept a lot of the ticket stubs from bands I have seen, how sad is that!
I was fortunate enough to see Queen play a small theatre in Southampton,UK in 1975/6, excellent, and then again a couple of times in the early 80's at Wembley stadium. A truly larger than life band.

Although my list is similar to yours, my single most regret is turning down tickets (twice !) to see Genesis perform the opening and closing tour shows of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, in the U.S. The first show ever was at The Auditorium Theater, Chicago, November 20, 1974 with a return to close the U.S. tour in Chicago at The Arie Crown Theater February 4, 1975.
No amount of regret can make that up (save for getting around to Genesis doing the Lamb revival with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett back in the band that they have been talking about for years!)

I'm insanely jealous. I blame my parents and their parents and their parents...

Being born late sucks.

Obsessive, I have a little box with almost all my ticket stubs in it. Its amazing how inexpensive concerts were back then!

Paul & Dave, It is impressive but so many of them were such a LONG time ago some of the memories are a bit foggy. I don't remember when I saw Van but it was at the Greek Theater in LA in the 80s. I think :)

JEFF! OF COURSE I REMEMBER WHAT FLOYD TOUR I SAW! I was wearing a yellow shirt and jeans. I went with Frans, Kathy, Symon and Scott. I was drinking red wine out of a bota bag and was under the influence of LSD. It was a glorious outdoor summer concert with all the animals floating in the sky. It was 1977. I was 17. It was the ANIMALS tour. It was one of the best I've ever seen and only wish I would have seen them more than once.

John - yep, I save my stubs too and am proud of it :) I am jealous that you got to see Queen, but happy for you. It must have been incredible in a small setting!

Perry - I have several regrets too and wish I could turn back time to see a few bands I missed. I'll check out your podcast.

Mad, yeah I always felt I was born too late too...I should have been around for the 60's music scene.

What a fantastic list. You have seen all the big ones in your era, and then some!

Perry: I, like you, would be kicking myself. As much as--by the boys' own admission--most of the Lamb shows sucked due to malfunctioning equipment and/or Peter's costumes getting in the way, I would give up a limb to see the Lamb in its day.

A true Genesis reunion wouldn't be the same, but I'll take it.

Great list!! :) There are so many on there that I want to see.

It's been 17 years since I last went to a real concert(I saw Kansas a few years back on the opening night of a local festival in the park thingie, so
I don't count that as a concert). I believe my last one was Crosby, Stills and Nash.
My list is maybe 12-15 concerts long and mostly in the 70s(hard to go when you're broke).

OK one more sob story . . .
Sitting with my friends at high school. This has to be circa 1973.
Friend leans over and says "Steely Day is playing tonight a North Central college (small junior college in the burbs) probably in the gym. Ya wanna go?"
Steely Dan is touring Countdown To Ecstasy at the time and I just didn't feel like going out that night. Back then going to two or three shows a weeks was not uncommon.
But here comes that crossroad in destiny. My response:
"Nah, we'll get em next time . . ."
Famous last words.
Steely Dan disappeared from the touring world shortly thereafter not to reappear until the 90's I believe with the Gaucho Tour.
Oooops . . . !

And to reflect on the prices on your ticket stubs, my best had to be the $6.50 (.35 ticket fee) Rolling Stones matinee (2:30 PM) with Stevie Wonder opening.
That was value for your dollar

And Layla (and other readers) please do check out the show.
I suspect readers of this column will really enjoy it . . .

Don't wanna brag (too much), but, I saw Led Zeppelin on July 3rd, 1980 in Mannheim, Germany when I was 14.Just happened to be visiting Grandma in the Old World. And yes, it was very cool.

Saw the Firm with Jimmy and Paul Rogers a couple years later, same place. AND NOW it looks like Paul is doing a tour with Queen!!! Wont be the same, but it will certainly be well worth it to see...

My first show was the Monkees at Disneyland (Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart w/guest star Peter Tork)late 70's. My first "concert" was The Who at the L.A. Forum in spring 1980. I've seen Rush, Pink Floyd, Kansas a number of times, VH w/Sammy... and I'm sure a bunch more but, ya know, I just can't remember at this late hour before sleeping in Germany...
Luv to see Tom & the Heartbreakers. Bean driving to work with Tom the past week...

But the real reason I dialed into the Blog was to say; I heard Dr. Demento on a cassette tape today that I found in my car. It was a radio recording from KLSX, perhaps the mid 80's? And after that some "Get the Led Out" from a friday afternoon on KLOS. I'm sure I have a few KMET recordings if I can just find that box...

Gute Nacht Von Chairmeny,
Patric

Oh, thats right I saw CSN at a free "Iniki" show on Kauai in 1992. I even shot it on video, as well as an evening with Graham Nash at Hanalei Park a few weeks later (or earlier??)

Pat, dude - you have EVERY right to brag about seeing Zeppelin in 80!!! I won't share my "how I almost saw Zeppelin and have the unused tickets to prove it" story again since I've told it so many times here.

Okay you made my day mentioning Dr. Demento and Get the Led out - they STILL do Get the Led out on KLOS! I miss KMET!!! Those were good times.

Thanks for stopping by, visit again!

Hey, I just changed my cover cause a Tibetan gave me a four leaf clover. (true story)

I thought I'd shoot it with me digicam before it got limp.

Suppose I could have pressed it in a book...

Oh ya, I've seen Phil Keaggy at least 15x. I shot him in Zurich last fall. Kägi is a swiss name ya know.
