Happy Birthday Elton John

Elton turns 61 years old today.
Do you consider Elton John to be "Classic Rock"?

One of my most basic definitions of classic rock (I have serveral) is:

If they play it on KLOS its classic rock.

What is your favorite(s) Elton John song?

Mine are:

Madman Across the Water
Razorface
and
Saturday Night's Alright

I consider some of Elton's early work to fall under the "classic rock" umbrella. I am a big fan of his music. Some of my faves are:

Take Me To the Pilot
I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That
Philadelphia Freedom
Heartache All Over the World
Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word

I like his early stuff (up through the first Greatest hits collection), but he was sporadic at best after that. I can't think of a song of his that I've thought was good in maybe 25 years. But early on, he wrote some great tunes (usually with some awful lyrics).

Joe, OH! Those are probably next on my list of faves, those exact three. Great choices.

Malcolm - Hey buddy, I always love your comments since your not heavy metal like a lot of the crew that hang here :)

Bob, Good summarization. I don't think all his lyrics were awful, he definitely had some weird ones though!

Joe nailed it. Although he's primarily a pop artist, Elton John EARNS a classic rock waiver for life for "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding," which is a classic rock masterpiece.

And let's assign the proper blame here: Bernie Taupin wrote a few good lines, but overall he's responsible for the dreadful lyrics.

All of the songs mentioned are great examples of Elton tunes. I agree whole heartedly with David on Love Lies Bleeding. When it was a hit, I hated Philadelphia Freedom. I had a chance to see Elton in concert and he nailed that song...so it also became one of my favorites.
