James Brown - RIP

The Godfather of Soul died today. He was 73. James Brown was one of the most influential figures in American pop culture history.
Link to Wikipedia bio, and here's coverage in the NYT. Here are some links to vintage video of him in performance: Eyesight, Super Bad, I Feel Good, It's A Man's World, Please Please, Sex Machine, at the Olympia, Soul Power, Ed Sullivan, and an unusual TV interview (shorter clip here) Mr. Brown did when he was in a chemically altered state of consciousness after having been released from jail.

Of course this happens after I try to get the newsletter out early. B( Very sad. Someone that may be more sad will be the group L.A. Style that had a dance hit (and the first rave track charting on Billboard) with the song titled... "James Brown Is Dead." Kinda hard to hear a song that predicted a death (years before it happened) after the actual passing of that legend has occurred.

Even in death, he's still the hardest working man in show business. He was one of of a kind...

While not a huge James Brown fan I can't deny his talent and importance. I did actually work one of his concerts a few years back and even with his old age he put on a great show. "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" is one of the greatest songs ever.
