Clapton - Cocaine Question

I'd really like some opinions on this topic - what do you think about Eric's decision to start playing "Cocaine" in concert again? I've heard various comments but I want to know what YOU think!

"One of the first things Eric Clapton did when he began his recovery from drug and alcohol addiction was to quit performing the song, "Cocaine" in concert. "I thought that it might be giving the wrong message to people who were in the same boat as me," Clapton tells Associated Press. He says he has taken another look at the lyrics and believes it can be interpreted as an anti-drug song.

"Cocaine" was written by J.J. Cale, whose duet album with Clapton, The Road To Escondido will be released next month. Clapton is currently on the North American portion of a world tour. "

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, especially considering he believes the song portrays an anti-drug message.

Sure, why not; especially if he truly feels the way he does. Besides, it's one of his signature songs.

My two cents:

I love the SOUND of the song, its and find myself singing it sometimes but then am taken back by the fact that I am signing about a drug that has ruined the lives of so many people – including friends of mine. It’s always bugged me to sing such an upbeat song about a drug.

BUT – with that said, heck yes I think he should play it because the audience wants it, and like Bruce above said, it’s one of his signature songs. If I went to see him and he didn’t play “Layla” I’d go home one sad fan. Especially now that everyone KNOWS he kicked a drug habit – the song, like he said, can take on an anti-drug meaning.

I think Cocaine is a great song as well. He should be able to play whatever he wants!

I saw him play it, and he's changed the lyric a little bit.

I have mixed emotions on this one...I love the song but it does bring back memories....even the taste comes back...must admit...that is one drug I would be tempted to do again!! It is nice that he is able to play it again and it not bother him!!
