Opinion Needed

Driving home from work today I was listening to KLOS when a young man won tickets to see The Who in concert. He was very excited. It got me to thinking about the age thing, maybe you can shed some light on this for me:

It seems to me that the "greats" are still out there rocking and rolling after all these years - we are talking OLD folks (average age 60), kicking some butt on stage. And their fan base is multi-generational!!!

I think its great and am very proud to be old enough to say "I saw them in the 70's". But what's the deal? Who are the next classic rock bands going to be? What does this mean? Will rock and roll die when we lose these bands?

The only band that I can think of is U2, but they've been around for so long already. There hasn't been one band that has had the impact on rock music of The Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, or Sabbath in the past 20 years. Hopefully Rock will have a rebirth and not go the way of Doo-Wop.

I'm old enough to remember when these bands first appeared on the scene(i.e., Mick Jagger outdancing James Brown on the Ed Sullivan Show), and the fact that a lot of them are still alive amazes me. Not because they're "old", but because of the lives they've lead.
As far as the next classic rock band(s); it's difficult to say really, because there are so many fly by night bands that last only an album or two before fading away. I think guitar- driven rock will always be around, so who knows...

Well unfortunately for my generation I don't think I will have many bands being granted that "classic rock" status, maybe Nirvana, The Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and maybe even Dave Matthews. The only band I can really say I like out of that group is Nirvana which is sort of sad. I think the problem with music now is that people don't really like "rock" music as a whole but instead sub-genres of rock for instance Metal or Emo, from my experiences people rarely stray out of their sub-genre to explore variaties of music. I try to keep an open mind to the genre of rock by listening to everything but I know that doesn't apply to everyone, but to be honest with you I just don't know if the times have changed or it is just the talent of the bands.

Great input you guys. I guess in some ways it won't matter cause I'll be dead. That's a lovely thought. Just the mood I'm in.

That's a great question. I think classic rock is pretty much dead as a "new" genre. This isn't an inclusive list, but when I think of classic rock I think of artists like Led Zep, the Who, the Beatles, the Stones, Clapton, the Doors, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and maybe even the rock-proggers like Yes, old Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Rush.

I hate when classic rock stations start adding 80s rock music that they wouldn't have gone NEAR in the 80s and pretend it's now classic rock. Sorry, but as much as I love the Crue, it's NOT classic rock. Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Ratt are great, but I don't like classic rock widened that far.

Now if we rephrase the question to ask what groups years from now will have the same staying power and mutli-generational fanbase as these true classic rock groups, we already have one true winner: U2. Another likely one is Metallica.

There are some other metal bands that will always pull decent crowds (Priest, for example). Beyond that, I'll agree with Jeff and toss in Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band, both of which I could see pulling big crowds 10-20 years from now.

Wow, you really got me started on that one!

Hey, I like this blog too!
Anyhow, the best reflection on this topic I have ever read was about the Rolling Stones--It was pointed out how they have always loved our old American, Black blues guys.
So, if those old black men could perform until they were 95 years old, why not the Stones? Suddenly, it all made sense to me!

Rock on old dudes!

hey.. i'm sorry i'm anonymous, i was just browsing the web and came across this.. anyway, the only two bands i can think of are Radiohead and The White Stripes. Honestly, all I listen to is classic rock mainly, but these two bands are new and still amazing in my opinoin!

I believe like the above comment says that U2 will be one of the next generation of Classic Rock bands and possibly Derek Trucks Band, Govt. Mule? being a blues fan I liked the analogy to the old blues artists, If i'm not mistaken, Keith Richards actually made this comparison when once asked about the longevity of the Stones.while I'm thinking of it, heres a few other groups that come to mind:
Fuel
creed
Like one of the previous anonymous comments I too am a predominantely a classic rock listener and buyer.
