Southern Rock

I got to thinking about the genre known as “Southern Rock” as I watched Lynyrd Skynyrd be inducted to the R & R Hall of Fame earlier this week. Some say Southern Rock started with Elvis in the 50’s, or maybe with Creedence Clearwater Revival in the 60’s. Love them both but my fave So. Rock band has to be from the early 70’s – The Allman Brothers.

What bands come to mind when you think of Southern Rock?

What defines Southern Rock – is it the sound or the fact that the band is from the South?

Do you personally like Southern Rock?

Do you know where any of these bands originated from:

The Outlaws, Charlie Daniels Band, Molly Hatchet, Black Oak Arkansas (uh, this is an easy one)?

Personally, I think Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best example of southern rock. I wonder what the line is between southern rock and "rockish" country.

I think southern rock isn't just defined by where a person is from, but their attitude and upbringing. Ted Nugent and Kid Rock are both from Michigan, but I'd consider their music (some of it, at least) southern rock.

Of course, no one starts a "southern rock" band anyway. They just start a rock band.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and Creedance are definitely my two favorite Southern Rock bands, and I'd probably give the edge to Creedance.

I would also agree with Russ and it's all about attitude, you don't have to be from the south to play southern music.

I wouldn't say I love Southern Rock but I certainly enjoy listening to it once in a while. I'll never turn down some CCR!

Yeah, speaking of attitude, aren't the members of CCR from the SF bay area? That's about as far away from the south as you can get, but they managed to successfully mimic the style of southern rock.

Or did they? Kinda hard to tell without having been there when they started.

I agree about attitude...several of these bands aren't from the "true" south. It's not where your from logistically - it's what music is in your soul!

Lynyrd Skynnyrd, Allman Brothers Band, LeRoux, Georgia Satellites, The Fabulous Thunderbirds (they kind of blended blues with southern rock), and I'd even argue that Credence Clearwater Revival was the pre-cursor to the whole southern rock sound. To some extent I think even ZZ Top was also a bit of a southern rock sounding band.

Both, but definitely moreso the sound

Yes, some, but not all of it.

No idea about the Outlaws or Molly Hatchet, but wasn't the Charlie Daniels Band from Georgia?

I saw the Allman Brothers w/Dickie Betts about 12 years ago and they were amazing. I've seen Clapton, Buddy Guy, Santana, Alvin Lee etc. and Dickie Betts put on a clinic--amazing. The best guitarist I've ever seen.

Greg Allman voice and the Hammond B3... wow.

When I was really young they had this wall in Laguna Beach that was a tribute to Duane Allman. It had a picture of him painted on it and people would leave flowers, joints, letters...It was really interesting. Eventually they tore the wall down since the City said it served no purpose. Sad.
