Johnny Depp

Since this blog is about music I haven't had a logical reason to post a photo of JD here, but thanks to Rolling Stone Mag I was reminded that Johnny first moved to LA to start a band. Of course I could have used the Keith Richard connection.
"Depp moved to
"Weird," he finally adds.

Chrissie Hynde's Advice to Chick Rockers:

technorati tags: Classic, Rock
1. "Don't moan about being a chick, refer to feminism or complain about sexist discrimination. We've all been screwed over but no one wants to hear a whining female" (Stevie Nicks, please take note - you whine!)
2. "Never pretend to know more than you do. If you don't know chord names refer to the dots. Don't go near the desk unless you plan on becoming an engineer."
3. "Make the other band members look and sound good. Bring out the best in them; that's your job. Oh, and you better sound good too. "
4. "Do not insist on working only with females, get the best person for the job. If it happens to be a woman, great - you'll have someone to go to department stores with you on tour instead of making one of the road crew go with you. "
5. "If you sing don't belt or screech. No one wants to hear that shit; it sounds hysterical."
6. "Try not to get sexually involved with any member of the band. It will only end in tears."
7. "Don't think that sticking your boobs our and trying to look sexy will help. Remember - you're in a rock and roll band. It's not ""f" me", it's "f" you."
8. "Don't take advice from people like me. Do your own thing always."

Van Halen - David Lee Roth

This is the image that comes to my mind when I hear David Lee Roth. Not the loud mouth super bleached going bald blonde, but the athletic and energetic DLR back in the day.
I also think his voice is (was?) incredible - the perfect vocal ability for a rock band.
I've seen VH a few times, twice on the Diver Down tour and once in the front row. Watching this guy do his acrobatic act was almost as impressive as Eddie's solos.
Ahhhhhhh those were the days.
I bring this up because I am going to see an old acquaintance (a friend of my sister) next month and theysupposedy have "the best" Van Halen tribute band out there, The Atomic Punks.
The guy we know, Ralph, is David Lee Roth. Not Sammy Hagar, Not Gary Cherone (poor forgotten Gary - love ya bro!) but DLR; BECAUSE everyone knows that he is the real lead man for Van Halen. I love Sammy - but it just wasn't Van Halen (to me) without David.

QUESTION FOR YOU:
Do you ever go see Tribute Bands? If so, do you like them? I find most of them a bit embarrassing to watch with the exception of two that are so good you forget you are not seeing the real band! They are:
Bruce in the USA
and
A Space Oddity

THE LA ROCK SCENE OF THE 80'S

The problem with writing this is that…well…my memory of those years is really foggy. I no longer drink to the point of being intoxicated and I don’t use any drugs…but I have to admit I was a full-on party girl back in the day.
The three most famous clubs in LA are The Roxy, The Whiskey and The Troubadour. I can’t remember who I saw where or when or with whom…but I can say I had a great time! It was an exciting time in music for us here in So Cal. Here are a few bands I saw on “the scene”:
Skid Row
Kix
Ratt
Great White
Some of the guys I knew form high school got into the scene, and a few even made it big! It was very cool to seep people I knew show up on MTV videos and play on the radio! I’ve since lost track with all of these guys, but maybe you’ve heard of one or two of them:
Kenny Vera – vocals/guitar (don’t know what happened to him)
Ralph Saenz – vocals/guitar (is now with The Atomic Punks as DLR (it’s a Van Halen Tribute Band)
Scott Griffith – guitar (you know who he is if you read here, RIP Scott)
Paul Wilson drummer (drummer for??? Can’t remember!)
Matt Sorum drummer (went on to play drum with G&R and The Velvet Revolver)
Once after a show I got to meet Ratt and did a few tequila shooters with Steve Pearcey and got to hang out once with Robbin Crosby (RIP). At the time he was just another rocker that I met up with. It was fun to see him later and stake my claim to fame “I partied with that guy!”
