New Springsteen Biography - No Split with Patti

Hey Bruce fans, hot off the press:

"Greetings From E Street"

Esteemed rock journalist Bob Santelli will soon publish a new book titled Greetings From E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band-- the first and only collective biography of Bruce and his band written with participation from its members by a long-time intimate.

Over 200 photos, documents, handwritten notes, and souvenirs join tour stories, reminiscences, and little-known facts to give readers a full picture of one of the most iconic bands in American rock music.

For more information, visit www.brucespringsteen.net, or to pre-order the book now, visit Amazon.com.

ALSO:

Bruce had this to say about the rumors of his split with Patti. I would just like to go on record as saying that I think they will be together forever. :)

A couple of bands I'd personally never heard of have been brought to my attention recently.
I like all three of them.

Tom Hamilton has Cancer

Aersosmith's bassist in unergoing radiation for throat cancer but will re-join the tour by October. I pray that he was a full recovery and is able to continue rocking for many more years.

Which brings up a QUESTION:

Some bands seem to keep going forever (i.e. The Stones). What do you think a good indicator is for a band to call it quits AND can you think of any old time rockers that have gone past limit?

What do you think?

The five bands/artists listed on my iPod have one thing in common - do you know what it is?

I am going to do a post on this subject later.

Humble Pie

Humble Pie was around in the early 70's and had some very strong talent. Humble Pie was formed when Steve Marriott left the Small Faces. He teamed up with Peter Frampton (The Herd) as well as Greg Ridley (Spooky Tooth) and drummer Jerry Shirley. They came out with quite a few albums over the year but I think Smokin' was probably their best known.

For me personally this album was the first one that felt truly rebellious because the lyrics were so blatantly about sex, drugs and rock and roll (with an emphasis on drugs). My friend's parents would not allow her to listen to it which made it our favorite album! We would dance to Hot and Nasty and 30 Days in the Hole and honestly never really give much thought to what it meant - we just LOVED the sound .

Later on when Peter Framptom went solo it was hard to believe he was the same guy that was in Humple Pie. His new image was not down and dirty rock n roll anymore, he was more the smiling and loveable pop rocker. I still liked him (okay, I LOVED him) but he was no longer "rock n roll" .

Some of their best known songs are:
Big Black Dog
Stone Cold Fever

Shine On

C'mon Everybody

Hot 'N' Nasty
30 Days In The Hole
Ninety-Nine Pounds
I Don't Need No Doctor

If you choose to watch this You Tube video I found, remember - this was LIGHT YEARS before we has the techonology of today and long before there was such a thing as a "music video"

Metal Mark - Question for You!

Driving home today I had my usual Classic Rock station on and they played songs by Quiet Riot and The Scorpions and it made me ask this question:

WHAT DEFINES A BAND AS HEAVY METAL? What are some examples of heavy metal bands?
I've seen some of these bands referred to as Heavy Metal, what do you think?

Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
The Doors
Rush
Queen
Kiss
Aerosmith

So I am going to an exper, the author of Heavy Metal Time Machine, for his opinion.
Please feel free to add your two cents worth too.

Here is a Timeline of Heavy Metal I found on Wikipedia

MY LINKS ARE GONE!

I just noticed the links here are GONE - the ones to all the great blogs out there - like YOURS!

I will work on this immediately.

I will also add some names to my list of musicians that have passed away that Darrin emailed me weeks ago.

I've been a slacker!

Steve Miller Band

I missed a good concert this summer and am kinda bummed.

Steve Miller, to me, is all about having a good time. Most of his music is fun, upbeat, catchy. This year he celebrated 30 years in the music business.

Once again - an old guy out there rockin. Gotta love it.

Opinion Needed

Driving home from work today I was listening to KLOS when a young man won tickets to see The Who in concert. He was very excited. It got me to thinking about the age thing, maybe you can shed some light on this for me:

It seems to me that the "greats" are still out there rocking and rolling after all these years - we are talking OLD folks (average age 60), kicking some butt on stage. And their fan base is multi-generational!!!

I think its great and am very proud to be old enough to say "I saw them in the 70's". But what's the deal? Who are the next classic rock bands going to be? What does this mean? Will rock and roll die when we lose these bands?

Article on Led Zeppelin

I am not a huge fan of Rolling Stone magazine - in fact if I didn't have a free subscription, I'd probably never look at it. But this month there is a good article on Zeppelin.

You may recall that Rolling Stone and Led Zep have a very negative history due to RS dissing LZ when they first started out. It wasn't until Cameron Crowe (article is linked) convinced them to do an interveiw that the contempt was replaced with a reserved trust.

This months issues has an article with an in depth history of the beginnings of what I consider to be one of the best bands ever.
