What is a band without a drummer? Well, in my humble opinion - not much. I would rather listen to a solo drummer all night than a band without one.
So, with that said lets hear it:
WHO ARE YOUR TOP FIVE DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME?
Here are a few of mine, it's hard to list only five:
John Bonham
Carl Palmer
Neil Peart
Mitch Mitchell
and
Rick Allen (out of sheer admiration he makes the cut)
Found this by accident:
Heavy Metal Drummer Oh I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands I used to go see on the landing in the summer She fell in love with the drummer She fell in love with the drummer She fell in love Shiny shiny pants and bleached blond hair A double kick drum by the river in the summer She fell in love with the drummer Another then another She fell in love I miss the innocence I've known Playing Kiss covers beautiful and stoned Unlock my body and move myself to dance Into warm liquid, flowing blowing glass Classical music blasting masks the ringing in my ears Oh I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands I used to go see on the landing in the summer She fell in love with the drummer She fell in love with another She fell in love I miss the innocence I've known Playing Kiss covers beautiful and stoned I miss the innocence I've known Playing Kiss covers beautiful and stoned Playing Kiss covers beautiful and stoned | |

I think drummers are quite underrated. I too would rather listen to a solo drummer all night that have to listen to a band without a drummer. But to narrow it down to 5 is not an easy task:
1. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) - Portnoy is actually the reason I got into Dream Theater in the first place. The guy is a total monster on drums!
2. Jeff Porcaro (Toto/Steely Dan) - At age 16 Porcaro was doing studio sessions with Steely Dan. Porcaro was an incredibly talented groove drummer who played on just about everybody else's material throughout the 80s-- in addition to his impressive work with Toto. His best work, imho, is actually from Toto's 1992 album Kingdom of Desire which they finished recording shortly before he died.
3. Danny Seraphine - As a founder and guiding force behind Chicago, Seraphine was constantly striving to better himself. From learning brush technique from jazz greats Elvin & Jo Jones to teaching himself midi sequencing and drum programming in the eighties (the rationale being, that if a computer was going to be doing the drumming for Chicago, he wanted to be in control of that computer). He adapted to changing times and musical styles as was needed over the course of his career. It is to Chicago's detriment that he was voted out of the band in 1990.
4. Simon Phillips (ex-The Who/Toto) - Filling the shoes of the legendary Keith Moon in the 80s as The Who's touring drummer was no easy task... Add to that being asked to step behind the kit, replacing Jeff Porcaro in Toto... Phillips has had some rather big shoes to fill. Which he has done with incredible ease. While Phillips style is considerably different than Porcaro's was, he is an excellent fit for Toto. Rather than asking a Porcaro clone to play "Jeff Porcaro karaoke" every night on the road and in the studio. Simon has made the Toto classics his own and Toto has evolved in such a way that makes his style a better fit for their band.
5. Carl Palmer (Asia/ELP) - Palmer needs no introduction or explanation. He just IS Carl Palmer!
Mitch Mitchell is probably my favorite. He has such an amazing style.
John Bonham, Keith Moon. Ringo did some good stuff with the Beatles.
Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins is awesome.
Adrian Young of No Doubt is exceptional too. "Sunday Morning" in particular.
I think those are my favorite drummers. I'm really picky with drumming. Most of it doesn't move me, but once in a while I'll find someone who does.
I love drummers, but I can listen to music without one. I often just like that one on one feeling with an artist just with his acoustic guitar and voice.
My Five Favorite Drummers are:
Keith Moon - The Who
Danny Carrey - Tool
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Carl Palmer - ELP
Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters (He is the definition of Rock)
As for a 6th person I would choose Animal from the Muppets, he was incredible on drums!
you should check out BILLY COBHAM, the greatest drummer of all time, but his bands (mahavishnu orchestra, and one named after himself) arnt as top notch as he is. his album spectrum is incredible
Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Paul Whaley, and Mitch Mitchell.
I agree with Jeff on all,but think Alan White from "Yes" should included. What about the drummer for Santana? When I saw them in'74
he was only a teenager.--Does anyone remember his Name?
Anonymous,Billy Cobham was one of my Idols as a kid.I even bought the same "Chrome Fibes Double Bass Set"he had.Got to see him at a jazz club in Houston.Tx in'75?I believe Stanley Clark was on bass, sweet huh?
