Who Is the Queen of Rock?

A few posts ago Dan asked us all what our favorite rock magazine is, then yesterday I heard of this new one that sounds interesting and worth checking out: Venus Zine is a "Chicago-based national magazine Venus Zine, the leading source for emerging talent in music, art, film, fashion, and culture"

They recently polled their readers and asked industry insiders to answer this question:

Who is the Queen of Rock?

I was thrilled to learn that my top choice was the winner, Chrissie Hynde.

Patti Smith has been called the Godmother of Punk. Joan Jett is often termed the Original Riot. Michael Jackson will always be known as the Prince of Pop. Aretha Franklin will forever be the Queen of Soul. The big question is“Who is the Queen of Rock?”
There are so many brilliant women in the history of Rock – this decision is a tough one, but it is time to name the the girl to hold the crown along with Elvis... , along with input from polled online readers and industry insiders decided upon this rocker chick, and the winner is...Chrissie Hynde.

"Long before it was widely accepted for women to front Rock ‘n’ Roll bands. Chrissie Hynde had no problem stepping up to the mic and into the spotlight. Best known for leading the Pretenders since its inception in the late ‘70s. Hynde has been a one-woman wrecking ball and also a magnetic force field of rock music for the past 35-plus years.
Chrissie Hynde will always be the “talk of the town,” and for that Venus Zine proudly crowns her the Queen of Rock."
There next issue hits the stands on August 17, be sure to check out their article on Chrissie.

Now the Big Question Is:

Who do you think should be crowned "Queen of Rock"?

I love Chrissie and have written about her Here, Here and on several other posts that can be found if you click on her name in the sidebar under "labels".

Chrissie Hynde's Advice to Chick Rockers

Thanks to a comment by Cris Cohen I was reminded of this.  I recommend it to any woman who wants to be in a rock band, you may have to click it to get a larger version. This is specifically why I love this woman:

I love Chrissie Hynde! But.....???

I've been a fan of The Pretenders since they debuted back in '79. She got my attention with "Stop Your Sobbing" and totally had me with "Brass in Pocket".

I love her because she is one of only a handful of females that I consider true rock and rollers. She's got that edginess about her that says she's not just some chick in front of a band that can sing and look good. She IS the band, the songs are HERS she's about the the MUSIC not about being a female that can sing and look sexy with a mic, or some dipsy gypsy in long skirts or some wanna-be hard ass in black leather. No, Chrissie is above and beyond all that just by being herself and being talented.

Sadly her band went through some hellish times losing two members within a year - both to drug overdose. But since she IS the band, she kept going and although I can't say I've ever loved anything quite as much as that first album, she still rocks.

I have the opportunity to see them at a SMALL VENUE (Indian Casino) in March. Can I let this pass me by? I don't know....

The only seats left are in the back, Section D, back rows, far left seats. I need to decide soon.

Trivia questions about The Pretenders/Chrissie:

Where was she born and raised?
What college did she go to and what was it famous for?
(Hint: she sings about these things...)

Who wrote Stop Your Sobbin?
(Hint: a guy she was dating at the time famous for his own band)

What are the names of the two original members that both died in June 82 and April 83?

The closest I'll ever get to being a real rock star...

...don't know if any of you read my other blog, Writing from the Inside Out, but the post today is sort of music related! I am SO excited!

...and speaking of my favorite female rocker, Chrissie Hynde, it was this week in 1980 that The Pretenders came out with their first album!

Chrissie Hynde's Birthday

Luckily one of my new daily blog reads, Pop Culture Dish, reminded me that it's her birthday today. I love this woman. She IS rock and roll. If I were a musician, she would be my role model. I am so embarrassed by some female "musicians", but am proud to point people to the REAL DEAL.

Happy birthday, Chrissie, you ROCK!

My Girl Is Coming to Town!

But dang it, not MY town! I have a buddy who is going to see them FRONT ROW this week. He lives in Minnesota and I am so envious I could scream.

Oh yeah, they're opening for The Who. I guess they would be kinda cool to see front row too.

I went back to Ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown.....
