"And now welcome, Mr. Peter Frampton!!!"

I'll never forget the night I sat in the audience anticipating the concert of this newly famed artist. He put on a great show and was so adorable (still is).

I have always felt his talent is under-rated. He's a really good guitarist and songwriter and vocalist! Sadly I think somehow he got looked over because he was so cute and baby-faced and did that totally lame movie "Sgt. Pepper" (does anyone remember that????) Here is a snippet from Dave White's review of Peter's new album:

Peter Frampton - Fingerprints From Dave White, Your Guide to Classic Rock. 'Def Leppard did it with Yeah!. Ozzy Osbourne did it with Under Cover. Peter Frampton is doing it with Fingerprints. "It" is artists recording albums that are tributes to other artists whose music has influenced them. Frampton took it a step further an invited some of those artists to join him on the album. Fingerprints is "the album I’ve been waiting my entire life to make," Frampton said when the album was announced. "I wanted to play with people from all over the world, and I wanted to make the selections as diverse as possible."

Did he succeed? Oh, yeah. Styles range from rock to swing to r&b, blues, and country. Guest players include present and former (respectively) Rolling Stones Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman; Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and Mike McCready; original members of The Shadows, Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett; Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule). The guest list also includes several well-known session guitarists Paul Franklin and John Jorgenson, and Courtney Pine on saxophone. Frequent co-writer (and the album's co-producer) Gordon Kennedy is featured, along with Frampton's regular band-mates, John Regan on bass, Arthur Stead on keyboards, and Shawn Fichter on drums."

September 23 - Happy 57th Birthday Bruce!

You just keep getting better with age!

Boz Burrell - RIP

I just heard the sad news that Bass player Boz Burrell died on September 21st. I found this out over at Will and Ben's Record Room
and have cut and paste this from their site:

Originally a lead singer of his own band during the 60's Boz joined up with King Crimson in 1971 to play Bass, and then in 1973 formed Bad Company alongside former Free vocalist Paul Rodgers. The band were a major influence on many late 70's and 80's Rock bands including Foreigner, Rainbow, and Whitesnake.

I am disturbed that I can't find more about this in the news. My heart goes out to his friends and family.

I love my iPod

$$$$Buy Music$$$$

I just spent too much $$$ on iTunes. I can't believe what I got, but I love it all. I picked out some songs that I needed to complete my collection.

I love music.

The Pretenders
The Rolling Stones Ozzy Osbourne The Monkees Diana Ross J. Giels Band No Doubt Otis Redding John Cougar Mellencamp Loggins & Messina Heart Nickleback Rush Cat Stevens Harry Nilson Tina Turner Van Halen Enigma Five for Fighting John Coltrane Leona Naess Neil Young Evanescence Sons of Champlin Eric Burden

Love Stinks!

You don't hear too much about The J Geils Band. I've seen them a few time (once when they opened for the Tolling Stones).

I would categorize their music as fun, party music. Not a ton of depth to it, but these boys know how to have a good time. They love performing live and engaging the audience in every song.

Most of their stuff is VERY fun to dance to. Here is what they had to say about themselves:

The J. Geils Band got it crazy every night. They got down to it. Did they ever.

History tells us that the year 1967 was all incense and peppermints, paisley and Pepper, and other things groovy. But those lazy, hazy daze also produced one of the world's all time great, hard driving white rhythm and blues show bands.

For the next 15 years-14 albums and what must've been a million gigs - The J. Geils Band, in the words of former lead vocalist Peter Wolf, "felt obligated to give 100 percent of ourselves to our audience. We were a bunch of guys who had the passion and wanted to share it."

"There was a love affair between this band and its audience. We wanted people to know that we were gonna give it all that night", adds Seth Justman, the band's keyboardist, arranger, and later producer, who, with Wolf, co-wrote most of the J. Geils Band original songs. "Whatever we had in the tank, that tank was gonna be empty at the end of the show."

Although they will forever be favorite sons of the city of Boston, most of the J. Geils Band's six members were born and raised in other East Coast cities. By the mid-60's they had each found themselves in Boston with the intent of going to school, but enrolled instead in what Wolf liked to call the College of Musical Knowledge, earning their master's degrees in rock n' soul.

WEIRD SONG TITLES QUIZ

About Classic Rock has a new quiz. I did terrible on it. If I would have followed my instincts on the ones I guessed at, my score would have been much higher. I got 5/14!!!

If you take it, let me know how you did.

It's Friday.

The above song is blaring through my speakers (I have a nice set of speakers here at the office).

September 11 - Springsteen

It's not secret that I love Bruce, I've been a big fan since the '70's and have seen him 15 times in concert - which is not nearly enough by the way!

Over on my other blog I am doing a tribute to John Ueltzhoeffer, he's one of the victims of 9/11. I'll be posting songs from "The Rising" to go with each post. So it only seems logical that I would also mention it here at Layla's Faves.

My question for you - What songs can you think of over the history of rock n roll that have done a good job of speaking to your country (whatever it may be) about an event or or situation that permeated the minds of everyone in your country, or around the world. I immediately think of the song Elton John re-wrote Candle in the Wind after Princess Diana's death.

Bruce Springsteen recorded several songs about 9/11. I will share a few here in the next few days. This first one is said to be written from the perspective of a firefighter that survived but lost several friends in the towers. In contrast to the dark, sad verses, the chorus is a prayer asking that we learn something from these heroes:

(excerpt from “Into the Fire)

The sky was falling and streaked with blood
I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

The Doors 40th Anniversary

It's been almost 40 years since the Doors released their first album in January 1967 and this November a six-CD/DVD boxed is comming out which will include video performances and a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of each album. The remastered albums are The Doors, Strange Days, Waiting For the Sun, The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman. (the above taken from About Classic Rock)

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

1. Are you a Doors fan?

2. Do you plan to purchase this set?

3. Do you like it when bands do this, put all their best stuff out in compilation or do you think it's just a way to make money?

4. Would you be surprised to know I am old enough to remember (vaguely) watching the Doors perform on The Ed Sullivan Show when Jim pulled one of his infamous stunts? (hint: the answer to this questions is, "yes, Layla, I am shocked that you are that old, you look so young for your age")

You probably know the story: Sullivan made them promise to change the lyrics from "we couldn't get much higher" to something else because he didn't want the word "higher" (my things have changed since then!) on his show.

Okay - You HAVE to watch this video (its only 25 seconds long). I chose to use a cut from the movie, The Doors, rather than the actual footage from The Sullivan show because it - well it cracks me up and shows what was probably going on in the camera room! Check out the look on the girl's face when one of the crew screams "get the camera off him you can see his thing!!!" I wish it was a clearer video.
This is a Classic moment in Rock history (and doesn't Val Kilmer make a damn good Morrison?!)

Okay - Here's the REAL clip from the Show

Notes:
1. As usual the movie made this seem much more dramatic than it actually was.
2. Jim Morrison, in his prime, was too beautiful for words (imho)

Dear Faithful Commenters,

Once again I have lost my links to some of your blogs. If you would like your blog listed and don't see it, please tell me! Leave me the link and I will add it.
God bless and ROCK ON,
Layla

STOP RIGHT NOW!

You need to stop what you are doing and head next door (in my mind it's next door) and visit Imagine Echoes - the Review for a review on "Modern Times", the new Dylan album.

I'm equally impressed with it as Jeff is.
