25 Years Ago Today

We lost the best drummer ever.

For my reaction to the news see below - It's the story of how I heard of his death on my 21st b-day which turned a happy day for me into a very sad one for many)

Bonzo

- gone but not forgotten

John - you are the best, RIP Posted by Hello

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news that Bonzo was....dead? :(

It was my 21st birthday and I was feeling good. Over the weekend my friends have given me the BEST PARTY EVER. I was on the campus of Saddleback College and I noticed a group of people gathered around talking in hushed tones, some of them crying. One guy yelled over to me "Did you here? John Bonham is dead". It was inconceivable that he was dead. This meant there was no more Led Zeppelin (more on that later). How could this happen? People all over campus were talking. This was 1980 - Zeppelin was about to go on a US tour, the first in three years. Rumors were flying about whether or not it was a suicide. The actual cause of death was "choking induced by an alcohol overdose".

It truly was the day that Led Zeppelin ceases to exist. Unlike some rock bands who replace deceased members (The Who comes to mind) Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones ended the band. I admire them because to this day they have turned down the opportunity to make millions of dollars by re-uniting the band but they have stood firm. The ONLY two times the three remaining band members played together was at 1985's Live Aid and the 1988 30th Anniversary concert for Atlantic Records - BUT GET THIS - guess who their drummer was on both those occasions? Jason Bonham. John's son had followed in his dads footsteps since he was a little kid and was chose as the ONLY one allowed to sit in for the BEST DRUMMER who ever lived.

Happy Birthday Bruce

Happy Birthday, Friend.
Okay, so he's not my friend, but I feel like he is. He's always been there for me when I needed a lift. He's entertained me since I was in High School. He's probably the only man that can keep me dancing all night long. I've seen him perform every time he's been in So. Cal (about 17 times since '81).

And every year on September 23, I celebrate his birthday (it's easy to remember cause mine is 9/25).

I wish him many more years of health and hope he has a hell of a lot more rock n roll in his soul!!!

KISS

My sister is probably my number one rock n roll "hero" because she turned me on to so many good bands. Of course there were some that we just did not agree on. I like the music of KISS, but just could not get into the make-up and boots.

I just asked Sis to share a good rock memory with me and without hesitation she reminded me of the time that motley Crue (relatively unknown band at the time) opened for KISS. She and her friend had FRONT ROW seats and were, shall we say - a bit buzzed. Sis said Gene Simmons got right in her face and was staring into her eyes. This may sound like a positive, but she said it freaked her out for the rest of the night - LOL.

Gotta love Sis and her love for KISS.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BB!

BB King is 80 years old today!

"I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed."

IMHO, bass players are under-rated. For every great rock band, there is a bass player. How many lead guitarists can you list? Now....what about bass guitar? There's a few obvious guys but many of them stand in the background, keeping the beat for the band and go virtually unnoticed.

Today my 14 year old joined a garage band. Guess what he's going to play? Yep. I am hoping I can add his name to this list someday:

Ron Blair, Adam Clayton, Rick Danko (RIP) Roger Glover, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, Suzi Quatro, Dee Dee Ramone (RIP), Rick Savage, Nikki Sixx, Sting, Roger Waters, Verdine White,
Brian Wilson, Bill Wyman.

And my all time favorite bass player: T.J. Hill. Rock on!

Took a quiz just to make sure...

Rock
You are Rock!

You are articulate, likeable and popular. You have
a taste for living large and you don't often
look behind you to see the damage you leave in
your wake. You can influence lots of people
very easily, you just need to determine which
issues you feel are most important. Also,
watch out, many people you call your friends
might just be flakes along for the ride. Try
to figure out who really cares about you and
who you really care about in return.

Sammy Hagar

Quick, what's the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the name Sammy Hagar?

If you said Van Halen...you may have missed out on Sammy's career as The Red Rocker.

While David Lee was doing his acrobatics in spandex Sammy was in the middle of his own successful career. SAMMY HAGAR's live performances was LOUD, CRAZY and WILD!

I don't remember what year I saw him (too lazy too research it) but I would guess it was around 1985. The band opening for him was Quarterflash (one hit wonder "Harden My Heart).

On stage with Sammy was a huge red piano, some other stuff I can't remember and a red Trans Am with the classic license plate that said "IEATZ28". There was also a ladder and a trapeze type get-up. Sammy did not stop moving all night. He was jumping on the car, running around with his RED guitar, swinging from the trapeze, climbing the ladder. He was a madman and the crowd loved him. It was a great show.

So, three cheers for the Red Rocker BEFORE he became known as the front-man for VH!!!
