Will Republican Harley Riders Accept Democratic Bruce Springsteen?

V-Rod on the show room floorImage via Wikipedia Read about the somewhat controversial choice of Bruce Springsteen headlining the upcoming Harley Davidson gathering here at Real Rock News. I was going to write about it myself but he says it so well.

The nutshell version: Bruce is playing at a huge event celebrating Harley Davidson's 105th year. Bruce is known to vocalize his Democratic political thoughts during a show and the Harley crowd seems to lean toward the Republican party.

I wonder: Will Bruce make his typical comments or not?

If he does: Will there be real "boo-ing" instead or "Bruuuuuce-ing"?**

for those of you unfortunate enough to have NOT seen Bruce in concert, when the crowed yells "BRUCE!" it is often mistaken for "BOOOOO!" by firstimers....

The Wallflowers

I like this band.   Its not classic rock, its not really rock.  But I like it.

The Wallflowers are a rock band from Los Angeles, California, best known for hits like "One Headlight" and "6th Avenue Heartache" from their 1996 album Bringing Down the Horse. more...

I have a hard time keeping up with all the blogs I love to read but Rock and Roll Guru is usually a quick read and always something interesting, like Rock and Roll History.

Back on this date, 8/29 in 1966, The Beatles played their last show together. Check out Joe's blog for more history and my favorite "The Rock and Roll Dictionary"

This is a photo from that show:

Sleepless Night with John and Yoko

on John Rehearses Give Peace A Chance By Roy KerwoodImage via Wikipedia I was struggling to sleep last night so put in my iPod and checked out what podcasts I hadn't listened to yet.
There was an old Rolling Stones magazine interview with John Lennon. It was part five of the interview and now I need to try to get the first four parts because it was fascinating.

John was asked to talk about art and which artists he found interesting. He was very passionate about Yoko's work (naturally). He also talked about how underrated certain artists were.

He shared about some time he spent with Bob Dylan and said they were both very nervous around each other and that he considered Bob an acquaintance, not a close friend, but he admired his work very much and thought of him as a poet.

When asked how he felt about America John answered "I love America, and I hate it". He went on to talk about how he thought of Greenwich Village in New York to be greatest place on earth, like he should have been born there, not in Liverpool. He said he felt at home there more than anywhere else but that spending too much time in the city made him paranoid and he needed to get out to gardens, grass and trees to feel peace.

Yoko added her thoughts on just about everything John said and at one point he vehemently defended her against suggestion that she had anything to do with the break-up of The Beatles. He also made a few digs at Paul, but had nice things to say about George and didn't mention Ringo at all.

There was a lot more but what stood out to me was the many times he used the words "nervous", "paranoid", "frightened", "uncomfortable". I guess he had good reason to be. I miss him.

The End of a Great Tour

Bruce Springsteen - Barcelona - 19·07·08Image by Bisharron via Flickr Last night was the last performance from Bruce and the E Street Band on the Magic Tour. Wow. From the sounds of this review it was a show that will go down in history.

I saw the show on 10/20/07 and again on 4/7/98. Both times were great, but the show in April was by far better.

Its kind of sad that its over...one can only hope that another there's a few more left to come.

What did you think of Jimmy Page and Leona Lewis?

Please visit my other blog for a post on "Whole Lotta Love" being performed at the closing ceremonies for the Olymipcs:

Top Five Rock Voices

Who are your ten favorite "voices" in music any genre?

Who do you think are the top five most talented voices in rock music (if its different than above).

I need to think about this, but so far I have:

Favorites:
1) David Bowie
2) Jeff Buckley
3) Jonny Lang
4) Greg Lake
5) Annie Lennox
6) Gregg Allman
8) Robert Plant
9) Jim Morrison
10) Bono

Best:
1) Robert Plant
2) Roger Daltrey
3) Freddie Mercury
4) Paul Rodgers
5) David Lee Roth

Honorable Mention: Ann Wilson (wish there were more females on my list, but I have to remain honest)

Concert Moments

“The Rising” coverImage via Wikipedia Do you have any memories of a very specific moment at a concert? I have several. I can hear a song and its like being transported back to that spot. There's a few that I've shared here before, some good (U2) some scary (The Who & The Stones - getting squashed when the crowd rushed) and Van Halen (front row in '81, need I say more?).

But right now I am listening to The Rising. I'll never forget that tour. It was emotional, intense. Still very fun and upbeat most of the time, but Bruce pretty much set the tone for the songs he wrote to honor the memory of those that lost their lives or loved on 9/11.

Busted...

I was checking out The Rock Clock today to see if anything interesting happened on August 22. I found this story about Jefferson Airplane getting arrested before a show - Grace got mace in the face!. Then I found a marvelous photo of David Bowie's mug shot from an arrest in 1967 and had to share it! That David has always had so much class!

August 22, 1972
Not a great day in Jefferson Airplane history. First police receive a bomb threat before their show in Akron, Ohio. The heavy pig presence incenses the crowd, who throw rocks at a police car. The cops respond by using tear gas, which causes Airplane bassist Jack Casady to denounce them from the stage. He's arrested. Singer Grace Slick and guitarist Paul Kantner give chase after Casady is taken to the venue's basement and, after an exchange, Slick is maced in the face and Kantner is knocked to the floor by overzealous cops.

March 1976
Arrest on a felony pot possession charge. Bowie, 29 at the time, was nabbed along with Iggy Pop and two other codefendants at a Rochester hotel following a Saturday concert. Bowie was held in the Monroe County jail for a few hours before being released. The Rochester Police Department mug shot was taken three days after Bowie's arrest.
