What Are Your Kids Listening To?

Not all of us that read here are parents, and those of us who are have kids ranging from infants on up to 30! I am curious what kind of music your children listen to. I know there is a future rock star out there, Hudson Barry, remember the name. He's only 3 but he's already a Zeppelin fan.  I also know of a very young lady who's father is already teaching her about great music, I don't think she can even roll over or sit up yet.

My son's taste in music is deplorable. I can't even tell you the names of most of the "music" he listens to, its loud and has the "F" word littered throughout. I took him to his first Springsteen concert at age 9 but it didn't work (although he was thrilled that Bruce played "Murder Incorporated" because any song about violence is good with him).

There is hope because mixed in with the Hip Hop "music" he likes are a few good bands like Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day and The Killers.

So - what does your child(ren) listen to?

  1. I've been trying to educate my daughter, now aged 9 but the Beatles bore her rigid, yet she does like Keane and Crowded House so she has an ear for melody. Go figure! I've given up with classic rock - perhaps it's a teenage thing?

At the moment we are both enjoying Lady Gaga, Ting Tings and Bat for Lashes following Glastobury which she tunes in and out of depending on whether the computer calls (and there lies the ultimate truth for her generation).

  2. My adult daughter was always into the the mainstream acts while growing up. She loved Natalie Imbruglia, Matchbox 20, U2, Goo Goo Dolls, and her favorite was Savage Garden. She liked modern rock too and I managed to get her into the Beatles who are currently all over her ipod.

I am surprised about the number of young people who like classic rock. I believe that is because too much of the modern stuff is depressing. Most modern rock is about rebellion and alienation with too many "whoa is me lyrics." Of course, classic rock had some of that too, but it also had a lot more. How many modern songs have lyrics as intelligent as "Eleanor Rigby," or lyrics like Dylan wrote, or likes like Paul Simon wrote.

  3. My son loves KISS!

He is 14 and plays piano and drums and just cant get enough of classic rock.

    Also loves.

alice cooper, The Who, Zep, Beatles, and tolerates my Black Crowes and Gov't Mule.

    Good kid huh! :-)

  4. My daughter (19) is a fan of Broadway. Not my cup of tea. My son (15) is much more musically adventurous and he runs the musical gammut from metal to Tommy Emmanuel (he plays guitar). We started going to shows together a few years back, its kind of our version of the ballgame.

    Great blog by the way.

  5. Martin, she's doing good so far! I think its sweet that you you listen together :)

Charlie, Yes modern stuff is kind of tedious with the themes...at least in classic rock there is more variety. I love it when I see young people listening to or talking about Pink Floyd or other great bands.

Mike, your boy is another one that makes me proud of his generation! But with you as a dad, how can he go wrong. That kid has seen some great shows. I think live music really makes a difference.

Oldrocker, that is so cool that you and your son go to shows! Like I said above to Mike, I think seeing live music gives a whole new and deeper appreciation. Thanks for the nice words too :)

  6. My 22 year old also listens to rap (ugh) in all forms, BUT, you will then hear Jimi and Led Zep and the Allmans (Hey some osmosis had to work!) and other classic rock, so I guess I won 50% of the battle!

  7. Thanks to Guitar Hero, my 12 year old likes most of the stuff I get into. His tastes learn more towards the likes of Metallica, Systems of a Down, and Disturbed.

  8. I have an 11 yr old daughter and a 6 yr old daughter. Since they were born I have tried to brainwash them with KISS music and merchandise. Even though they know their KISStory, fate takes a hand and they find their kind of music.

My oldest daughter is a huge Twisted Sister fan.....through the 'I Wanna Rock' Spongebob tune titled 'Goofy Goober Rock'. Now she can sing word for word STAY HUNGRY & LOVE IS FOR SUCKERS along with some of the other big tunes on the other few records. I am taking her to see the band live on 9/12 in Plymouth, MA.

She has also started to raid my CD collection to sample different bands. AC/DC has become her second favorite band and she walks around the house with her Ipod on singing the entire BACK IN BLACK album. Other bands in her Ipod besides TS, AC/DC & KISS -- GnR, Van Halen, Queen, Motorhead, Saxon, Scorpions, Alice Cooper and Autograph. It's fun to see CDs missing from my cases and finding them in her room with a list of songs & albums for me to load into her Itunes.

My youngest follows what her sister does and she enjoys songs like TNT, School's Out, and Rock And Roll All Nite.

  10. My kids are still young (6 and 4) so they are still under the influence (brainwashing) of their father. So for now they are definite rock and rollers and can sing the words to many classics. We’ll see what happens when they get older. However, being a teacher for over a decade now I have worked with many teenagers. There is always a large group of kids who love rock and roll including classic rock (which now is up to and including the 80’s or later – yikes). There is always the hip hop crowd too, but rock and roll will never die!! lol

  12. Bond, good there's hope for my son!

Drew, I guess that's the positive side of video games.

Steven, love it!!! Sounds like they take after their daddy.

    Ok, Starr, show-off!! :)

Rock Brigade, keep up the good work!

Sean, I knew your little guy was another very young rocker! That is so cool!!!

  13. I can't help it if my Kidlet ownz =) Teens are capable of liking any and all music, if you just give them the chance to. Age should not limit what music you like. This goes for all of those who have written off "modern rock" as well. It ain't the music, it's your mindset ;)

  14. I dont have kids but if I did I'd let them listen to whatever they wanted.

  15. Starr, you know I was teasin about you being a show off. I think you and Kidlet have excellent taste and you know I am into modern rock too!

Rap, that's wise. I think its good to let a kid choose their own style of music. I try to influence my son (mostly for the fun of it) but the bottom line is we each have individual taste and that's what makes the world an interesting place.

  16. I dunno what my son is gonna end up listening to, I told him I was going to see Sammy's new band Chickenfoot and he got upset because he wanted to go to and had a fit because he couldn't get here to go.

I kinda brainwashed him into the Sammy Hagar thing........ not on purpose it just was what I was listening to at the time and he fell in love with it. Now anytime I mention it he goes nuts. He really wants to go to that show to. I told him I might not be able to get tickets, because when I told him I didn't think I was. Well turns out I only got one, so I'm keeping my mouth SHUT!! Him just turning 7 would have a fit if he found out.

  17. Guitarman, you are totally bogarting the Hagar. That's cold!

  20. i HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH A SON (15- ALMOST 16) WHO LOVES ALL KINDS OF MUSIC. HIS TASTE IS MORE ON THE MEAVY METAL SIDE RECENTLY. BUT HE ALSO LIKES GROUPS AND BANDS LIKE KISS, GUNS AND ROSES, JIMMY HENDRIX, ALICE IN CHAINS, LINCOLN PARK, MICHAEL JACKSON, QUEEN. AND OF COURSE ALL OF THE STUFF I GREW UP LISTENING TOO. I BELIEVE THAT YOU SHOULD BROADEN HORIZONS, ITS OK TO "LOVE" A ERA OF MUSIC BUT YOU SHOULD BRANCH OUT AND TRY OTHER GENRES OF MUSIC AND MUSICIANS INSTEAD OF "BEING STUCK"
