Happy Birthday, Neil! Born 11/12/45

(Special note to Angie, you are right, I forgot! But I heard a belated birthday tribute to him on the radio today so knew I was not toooooooooo late. Thanks, mate, for the head's up from down under!)

I think the cover of my "Decades" album wore so thin I had to tape it up. I loved Neil back in my younger years and still think he's one of the greats.

So, what are some of your favorite Neil Young songs?

I've always been partial to After the Goldrush.

Not a problem Layla. I almost forgot as well to be honest.

Well, I think I said once before that Neil, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith are my personal 'holy trinity' as far as music goes, but if it really came down to it, I'd have to say Neil is my favourite artist ever. I love him like Layla loves Bruce! He just gets me. His voice, his lyrics, his musicianship and just that he is such an uncompromising artist.

I've only seen him live once, way back in 1989, but it remains the best concert I've ever seen and one of the best nights of my life actually.

Some of my favourite Neil songs are Ambulance Blues, Sugar Mountain, Cinnamon Girl, Don't Let It Bring You Down, Harvest Moon (such a sweet song), Helpless, Like a Hurricane, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Old Man, Mr Soul, Out On the Weekend, Cortez the Killer, Natural Beauty ...

But my two all time favourite Neil songs are Powderfinger and Pocahontas. Brilliant lyrics and both beautiful, powerful songs in their own way. Pocahontas is just haunting to me. And I love Neil's lyrics in Powderfinger, a great little story, not to mention the guitar playing!

Anyway, I'll shut up now and just say, happy birthday old Shaky.

  8. One of my coworkers saw him live here in Chicago this past Tuesday night.

I like some of his material with CSN&Y, for his solo material I prefer his "folksier" material like the Harvest album over some of his more uptempo/more electric material.

Thanks Layla. I love being a reader here too. I found your blog by accident one day while looking up bad album cover art. I don't know how that worked, but anyway I'm glad it did! :)

While I'm at it, another Neil song I really like is Piece Of Crap. Neil has such a biting sense of humour!
