On my first week of college. My new roommate told me about a new "tv station" that aired rock videos. I thought it was not "tradtional" and not a good idea. Madoon adn the Fixx are glad I was wrong.
My friends and I had been waiting weeks for it to come on the air. We were sitting there passing a joing when it finally came on. We were glued to it for months...maybe years????
I was 8. But I was watching. I remember that in the beginning, my Aunt had MTV and we didn't. We would go out there a lot in the summer because she had a pool and a kick ass basement with a pool table, etc. But after I was done swimming, all I wanted to do was watch MTV. And I had a mad crush on Alan Hunter. No idea why now! He's not at all my adult type.
Funny--for the huge cultural phenomenon it was, and all the attention to the first video on there by the Buggles being a watershed, I don't remember anything about the first year or two of MTV.
It seems to be one of those things that seems more dramtic in retrospect.

ReplyDeleteI was in diapers in 1981! Yeah, that's right, I've never lived during a time without MTV . . .
ReplyDeleteAlthough, you could argue that we're now living in a time without true MTV. They've certainly left the M out of the TV in the past ten years.
None of the above. I was a working adult with no cable.

ReplyDeleteI was under age 11 and my local cable didn't pick up MTV until the late 80s. Although, oddly enough, they picked up VH1 in 1985 or 1986.
