Genesis were only really any good when he was in the band. His understated yet highly inventive playing was what made them different. Since his departure, they've sounded very bland.
Check out his acoustic albums 'Momentum' and 'Bay of Kings' to hear some stunning classical guitar. Like all good bands, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

That said, I've enjoyed Steve's solo work, and Peter's, more than the others' efforts and more than anything the band has done in the past thirty years (with the notable exception of most of the solid Duke album).

Steve Hackett remains, bewilderingly, the most underappreciated figure in all of classic rock.David Amulethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03758977878243268087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11886706.post-69265929261700473482008-03-24T08:57:00.000-07:002008-03-24T08:57:00.000-07:00Technically Collins wasn't/isn't an original. The original Genesis was:

Peter Gabriel - Flute, Percussion, Vocals
Tony Banks - Keyboard, Vocals
John Mayhew - Drums, Vocals
Anthony Phillips - Guitar, Vocals
Mike Rutherford - Bass, Vocals

My favorite member is guitarist Steve Hackett (who joined about the same time as Phil Collins and left in 1977, right before And Then There Were Three). I find the six studio albums he did with Genesis to be their best (they put out 2 great albums after Peter Gabriel left). His solo material is also quite enjoyable, even if it's not as well known as Peter Gabriel's solo work.Perplexiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09971805688658949769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11886706.post-45242626611749385532008-03-24T07:50:00.000-07:002008-03-24T07:50:00.000-07:00Was just thinking about this line-up this weekend....Was just thinking about this line-up this weekend...remembering interviewing them (all but Gabriel) while in college and then going bowling with Mike and Phil...Vinny "Bond" Marinihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07033455144526676371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11886706.post-89897108717921917742008-03-23T22:42:00.000-07:002008-03-23T22:42:00.000-07:00I've never been a fan of Peter Gabriel; I don't ge...I've never been a fan of Peter Gabriel; I don't get him.
